  • Do you research of raspberry pis, they are really great. You do need to be careful though, sdcards die comparatively fast, and you don't want anything important to be on it when it does. Or at least backed up (Borg is cool).

  • Sounds about right. I was a die hard fan of Intel for years. I upgraded my PC this year and I picked AMD for the first time in my life. Looking at the scathing reviews and performance tables, it is an insane choice to pick Intel.

  • We do also get money taken directly out of our pay check for health insurance. So it isn't just the 5 euro fee. But I think it manages to be considerably less, since everyone is required to have insurance. I think that brings down the cost for everyone.

  • Also Germany: I live rural. Most times I've gone I see the doctor itv takes than 30 minutes, but it depends on who else is there obviously. First come first served.

    Interesting that they ask you to call in advance. I've never had that. We can, if we want an after midday appointment for something specific.

    There used to be a 15 euro per quarter charge when using the local doctor. They scrapped that a few years ago.

    All the blood work I've had has been free. But I'm not sure what you meant by extensive. I take a lot of anti biotics, so they check my liver numbers occasionally.

    But yeah, generally a similar experience to you.

    You could host the server on its own vlan and use tailscale to tunnel from a VPS to your server. This way your IP isn't exposed to the public. You can also add crowdsec or similar on the VPS.

    I do the same thing with traefik on my dirt cheap VPS.

  • Also Cloudflare adds a caching layer, often physically closer to users. Increasing speed of delivery and reducing server costs. It's a no-brainer for server admins.

    Also, I don't work for Cloudflare either. The animosity is new to me, and certainly something I'll look into.
