  • I am confused. I'm using Jerboa, and it shows your account is a .world account. And this AskLemmy is on .world. Did you mean c/latestagecapitalism in particular? How/ why would you block the instance that you joined? Not trying to be dense or contrary, just honestly confused.

  • If hate for pickles was snapped away, then I suppose I wouldn't be minding so much when errant pickle juice gets on my food.

    It's not a disagreeable compromise.

  • Hate.

If it has to be something tangible, then idk, pickles maybe.

  • Which is kinda how we got to making flat earth posts in the first place, no?

  • Yeah, I'm saying a whole lot of people say it with a "shun" at the end. I blame the media and people originally trying to differentiate themselves from a perception of being an ignorant hillbilly. The hillbilly prejudice is much better now, but I was still personally encountering it even in the aughts. And the pronunciation has stuck because "that's the way you've always heard it said. "

Everyone who lives in those hills (with the exception of a few pockets of yankees) says it "at-chan".

  • Ok, at least the Virginia version is 'Nor-fuck'. And some long time residents say 'Naw-fuck'.

  • The mountain range on the eastern side of the U.S. is the 'apple-at'chans'. At least nearly everyone from the southern end of them say it that way (source: I'm from there).

'Apple-ay-shuns' is just as strange as saying 'Nor-folk'. Immediate indicator of you're an outsider.

  • What about FAQ?

Most everyone I know says F.A.Q. But I like saying 'fack', as in it's the page where you find the facts.

  • My aunt does the same with 'salmon'.

  • This whole thread shoulda come with a trigger warning, lol

  • That was last night at the family gathering. Why was the tv volume on at all? Everyone was shouting to be heard over everyone else. The amount of questions directed at me and me not able to string two thoughts together to reply intelligently because someone turned it on some bakeoff marathon and then hid the effing remote.

  • Mask those sounds with music or some banal tv while either of you eat. It's been a lifesaver for me.

  • We watch Family Feud during dinner. Obligatory "It's up there, Steve!"

Other palate cleanser shows include What We Do In The Shadows, MXC, or one of Zane Lamprey's travel shows like Three Sheets. Used to enjoy watching Nitro Circus quite a bit and miss it.

  • I wish there was a cliff notes version of these that cut out all the drama buildup parts that bookend the commercial breaks.

    • what did she find strange about America when she arrived here?
    • what did she do for fun?
    • does she recall any experiences her parents/ grandparents told to her about their lives?
    • what was her favorite meal/ treat as a kid?
    • what is the most scandalous story she heard from a friend or family member?
    • did she or anyone in the family sing or play an instrument? What did they play?
  • Raised by hippies who let me be free range a bit. One grandmother took me to Methodist church from age 6-12ish. Jr high friends got me to go to a Baptist church a little (those cats have no chill). Overall atheist though which drew some social ostracization when I let my views be known.

I was pretty hardline about it in my 20s. 30s were more "let everyone do their own thing, man". Now in my late 40s and I find myself drifting back toward agnostic.

There are unexplained things I've encountered. I'm reasonably sure science will catch up (maybe) and explain them. Until then, they remain "energies" that caused unexpected results, probabbly just weird brain glitches, but what if...?

  • I've had mine since 1998, when my .edu email was getting deactivated.

I have a couple of gmail accounts too, but the vast majority of my user ids are tied to my Yahoo.

I miss the MyYahoo landing page.

  • Ooh! They are capital cities of countries that begin with K.

  • Ooh! Good answer! But that's not it.
