  • Last time I looked into it something wasn't working right about it, or maybe it was just more complicated than I wanted but maybe I'll give it another go...

  • Can FreshRSS auto-download YouTube videos with SponsorBlock? That could be a game changer...

  • As others have said, you can run Home Assistant on anything if you want to just test it out. Their own hardware is a great choice though.

But to answer your broader question, yes. Home Assistant is the choice. It works better with literally everything else out there.

  • I upvoted you, but I do feel it's only a matter of time before the open source community outpaces Apple as well. Just a few short years ago the "year of the Linux desktop" was a joke. Now for many, Linux is unquestionably the better option.

Imagine having the option to be-exactly-like-MacOS-if-you-want-but-aren't-forced-to (basically what's happened with Linux and Windows this year). It would be game over for Apple, at least from a software perspective.

  • Zorin is a good OS but IMO it's a little too simplistic for most people who know what an operating system is.

But as the video gets at, the question of "when will Linux be better than Windows" is solidly "today". MacOS is probably still "better" for someone fully invested in the Apple ecosystem. But Linux is not far behind that either.

  • Thank goodness, the fan has a mind of it's own sometimes.

  • I can see you care about this a lot, so please tell me; in your opinion at what point does a PC cease to be "self hosted"? When it's carried across the property line? Maybe if the electricity bill is paid by a roommate?

  • Love to see the people in here gatekeeping "selfhosting" 🙄

We're all just out here trying to escape big tech. A docker container doesn't suddenly stop becoming "selfhosted" once the hard drive it's on crosses a property line. Who the hell cares, seriously.

  • Yeah I saw that... not really what I would consider a "web backup" exactly. I was hoping they were rolling out encrypted photo storage plans.

  • If I was the tyrant king of Lemmy I would force all communities to do this

  • I can't find anything about the web backups in the article or release notes.

  • It's my understanding that anything doing this would also need to also emulate Chromecast, since the "cast" buttons inside the Amazon Prime/Netflix/Spotify/etc apps uses the proprietary Chromecast protocol.

  • Back up an image the entire operating system HD when it's working well. If you ever get overwhelmed with bugs you can always go back to a functioning state.

We all like checking out the latest features and updates but it's important to remember that it's not a race.

  • Although I think I’m doing something wrong and the memory in modern games is just dynamic so the correct location can’t be found with just the memory addresses.

OK that's the same thing I was suspecting. I noticed the memory addresses had similar names, but there was no way to search for partial addresses or anything.

  • I couldn't get Game Conqueror working on Bazzite. PINCE worked, but I couldn't use any existing CE configs, and saving my own didn't work the next time I loaded the game either. That could maybe just be a Silksong thing but I've never had that issue before.

Not a dealbreaker for Linux, but it was the one time I remember thinking "this is a lot easier on Windows"

  • I'm rocking Bazzite and the only time I wanted Windows was when I got stuck on a boss in Silksong and wanted to use CheatEngine.

  • It really is just kind of a vibe, isn't it.

  • I was taught they are starchy but that was grade school days and I won't die on this hill. I certainly didn't mean to imply peas were unhealthy. What I found odd is that they are on opposite ends of the pyramid from "whole grains" which is a carb I would personally say is on about the same level as peas overall.

  • They stopped using the pyramid a longtime ago, but yeah this one isn't bad:

As a pile of (mostly) healthy food it's fine. But as an infographic it completely sucks.

EDIT: It's interesting they would have frozen peas at the top (mostly empty starch) but whole grains at the bottom (assuming the bottom means "sparingly"). Also red meat and butter should not be a large part of anyone's daily calories.
