  • Anyone know of a good managed hosting (or vps) for Immich that doesn't break the bank? I have about 5TB of photos/videos and I don't feel safe without a remote backup. I played with self hosting and I really (really) like Immich but I keep Google photos/Drive just to ensure I won't lose anything.

  • Hm I like that idea. That's a bit out of my wheelhouse but worth looking into. Maybe also have two zones? A larger one to trigger the location update?

  • Hmm my phone always takes a few minutes to update that I'm home.

  • Ah ok thanks, so just to be clear, when you come home it will still "alert" you to an "intruder" (until your GPS updates presumably).

  • That's cool, so with the AI chip it can recognize individuals people and pets? Just wondering how you prevent it from alerting you for well, you.

  • Last I looked into this Frigate was the most robust path to take, they recommend cameras that are about $50-$100 each but in my playing around I connected a Yi camera ($10) with custom firmware.

That said it was all a bit over my head and I had trouble connecting it to home assistant and gave up

I would love a follow up post with whatever setup you go with!

  • After installing an SSD and a couple of hours of clean-up, it was as fast as new. I guess with proper maintenance it can be good enough.

The reason people say Windows is "crap" isn't the performance, it's the ads.

  • 💯

  • No, you can't. You can have a custom domain ("PDS" is the term they invented for this) but it still relies on bluesky's servers.

  • Don't let them distract with with the "whattabout matrix". The Matrix Foundation is not a social media company, and furthermore it's a nonprofit.

  • You are correct. The term is called "openwashing". Now and then bluesky employees cultists will come on Lemmy and mastodon and try to LARP that their for-profit company has our best interests in mind.

  • BlueSky is centralized.

  • It comes from this 2019 post by Mike Masnick.

Unfortunately the atprotocol is more like Profits > People > Platforms
