  • I am using the app. I sent a message to Stix the admin of the instance and magically a few hours later I was able to see everything (but no response). I wonder if there is a timed lockout or simply a soft ban to prevent spam on that instance. I also verified that discover indeed linked to other instances, but the results were still all but useless.

    However, there is still no way I can find to switch to or even view the global feed on the app, but I can do that on the web browser app easily. Is there a setting that I am missing or so? It is very straightforward on every mastodon and lemmy app...

    To me, the entire idea behind federation is that, like mastodon and Lemmy, you can see everything in the space, not just what is on your own server, especially by default or extremely upfront and clear way to make the behavior like that. That is the entire thing people are afraid of when they have to choose a server which leads to centralization or people simply leaving.

    I mean I also don't get any of the hashtags I follow on my feed. Only the 5 accounts they forced me to follow by default.

    It's hard for me to believe the number of 44k monthly active users and yet the "most popular accounts" that I can see on discover have 45 followers and there is virtually no activity outside of a few photographers that imported their Instagram account.

  • Interesting because i just joined 1 day ago so my feed only has 5 default following, but discover only has about 5 other peoples' work repeated through the discover tab. It seems difficult to discover new people which could be a problem in retaining normal people after the ibflux, like what happened to lemmy

  • That sounds like a very easy usecase for it. Gaming, drawing tablet drivers, and CoreCtrl are maybe outside of opensuse's usecase then? I mean I guess they don't advertise themselves as a gaming distro, but if you system breaks upon layering some basic packages then it is not robust at all.

  • I use bazzite and opensuse Kalpa. The Kalpa experience is far worse as far as things being broken and needing fixing. Opensuse Kalpa only boots some of the time. In an average week I probably have 5 times where it won't boot at all just from some unlogged error of not being able to mount one of the partitions, different every time.

    Those are likely microOS/Kalpa related things, not opensuse vs other distros though.

  • The only problem with RSS is that it doesn't work for many many news sources as well as niche interests.

    The RSS feeds on most of my country's news sources are literally a headline with a link to their website. Plus the ones that it does work for break multiple times per year (at least on feeder) so being able to actually fetch the article is a toss up. Right now even with freshly added feeds, 9 out of 10 are "cannot fetch full article".

    I find most people's blogs rather boring and uninspired or extremely longwinded. I much prefer the kind of organic conversations from forums. Algorithms point me to the 4-5 pieces of content from people that I find interesting. I don't often subscribe to them because their other content is not as interesting.

    With RSS feeds I would have to manually search through hundreds of articles and blog posts just to find 3 that I might actually be interested in. For example the less niche Phoronix has like 20 articles per day that are essentially fluff article padding updates like "video acceleration improvements merged for Mesa 25". Like I don't care at all. But the LACT Intel support addition I would be interested in 10 articles down.

  • It will die when there is an alternative app that competes with marketplace. That + messenger keep most people there. Signal (or whatsapp which while meta, isn't tied to fb account)'already can replace messenger.

    That is simply the truth. Here is Belgium we have an app called 2dehands which is very prolific and have a way better interface and experience than marketplace (even though it is nowhere near perfect or great).

    Marketplace is definitely completely secondary to 2dehands in the Flemish part. Brussels still uses marketplace a lot, but literally all marketplace needs in order to slowly die off is competition but the 2nd hand market is not a lucrative app space with no real funding opportunities outside of data sale so nobody does it.

  • In the *arr suite, bazarr has a plugin called Subgen which you can add and you can set it to generate subtitles on your entire library if you want, or only missing subtitles. The sync is spot on compared to 90% of what Opensubtitles delivers. I sometimes re-gen them with this plugin just because opensubtitles is so constantly out of sync (e.g. highly rated subtitles 4 lines will be at breakneck pace and the next 10 will be super slow and then everything is 3 seconds off)

    It isn't in-player but it works. The downside is it is a larger model and takes ~20 minutes to generate a movie length of subtitles.

    Plus, nobody actually keeps up with filter maintenance. Charcoal filters sitting in free air are horrible for this. Charcoal filters have a saturation time as a function of mass

    I was looking into fiber laser safety for ABS vaporization for my company and came across a few studies (can't find right now).

    Activated charcoal filters in free air become saturated after like a week or so of use just because of the fact that they absorb both the tiny amount of unwanted compounds along with massive amounts of common air particles. You really need an enclosed container with butterfly valves like the Weller units https://www.weller-tools.com/us/en/filtration/products/solder-fumes with heavy carbon filters along with other absorbers in order to not completely saturate.

    After the first week, the "solder fume extractor" filters are literally just collecting dust. Your charcoal filter looks exactly like my mesh computer dust filter in the picture as far as what it caught.

  • Other opinion: I used that one for a few years and then it became unbootable, forever loading the login page with not an error in the logs (after multiple times of having to diagnose update failures in the past).

  • Hardware projects. Sadly, a lot of them are 90% or more done but never finished due to me not having access to my 3d printer anymore for another 6 months.

    • I made a smart dumb doorbell (a simple doorbell that sends a phone notification and plays a sound through speakers using ESPhome and home assistant with a battery that lasts many months). I couldn't find anything like it that wasn't point-to-point since we live in our shed right now. Very cheap to make too. We are almost to the point where I can set the 3D printer back up and iterate the housing the last time. My favorite but took a ton of time and was pretty frustrating sometimes.

    • my newest project: a fitness tracker without a screen. It tracks all the essential biometrics like heart rate, spo2, activity, and sleep and that is it. No stupid SaaS or enshittificstion bullshit. It doesn't have gps because if I need that, i will just use my phone.   • I am not talking about federated git repos. You are right, that is a huge undertaking with many issues to overcome.

    I am simply talking about dev's willingness to work only within X Y or Z website's ecosystem even if another project they want to contribute to exists on another ecosystem (for example KiCAD which exists on their own gitlab instance and needs a separate account or gadgetbridge on Codeberg). It is enough to stop many people from contributing.

  • I really don't understand it.

    It is 5 minutes to create an account and you can even use the same SSH key everywhere technically.

    Then just put a bit config per website and it literally requires nearly 0 additional work ever. You can commit to all the different places practically simultaneously.

    I guess you have to go to different websites for issues and I don't know if codeberg specifically has CI/CD tools, but I don't get why devs refuse to work on things outside github.

  • 32 bit embedded processors us a lot of 32 bit time, though i am not sure if date time libraries in SDKs have been updated to use 64 bit for time.
