Founder of European Graphic Novels, Aug '23 on Lemm.ee. Still going strong, now on PieFed. :D

I prefer to lean friendly & understanding, yet as someone dealing with a terminal disease, I'll admit that irritability can happen fast. Eh, nous faisons ce que nous pouvons. 🙄

  • I mean... your food looks like... something?

But is there some kind of Satan-influence, bonus maggots, and unusual FLATULENCE involved that sorta-kinda seals the deal, lol?

(bah... please don't mistake this for anything other than what it is, which is some doofus perfectly writhing in jealousy upon your efficient BBQ setup, dol-daggit...)

  • Iced tea is my daily drink, and I found that I was able to gradually cut down sugar over time, plus added a bit of substitute, like sucralose. So two sugar cubes and a packet of Splenda tastes perfectly normal to me in a Gatorade bottle of iced tea (828mL / 28fl oz / 1.75pints).

The amount of sugar commonly included in bottles & containers of iced tea in stores is absolutely insane.

  • I'm guessing flower heads, but that's a major omission from the linked recipe.

Checking a little, looks like the dried flower sepals are commonly sold in Mexican markets.

  • Cue Truman Show?

  • Real talk: putting almost any lifeform in to too-small an enclosure, with too few elements from their natural environs, is a pretty effective way to make their lives more miserable and get the least-interesting experience out of appreciating them.

    /mini-rant!

  • Americans aren’t overweight because of the “ultra-processed” portion of our high-calorie high-salt diet. Americans are overweight because our diet is high-calorie and high-salt!

Oh, I'd argue strongly that the former is also a factor. For one thing, the whole idea of calories in-calories out is a highly flawed concept that whiffs a lot on how the body actually processes foods. Things like resistant starches and slow-digesting grains are key in absorbing food in a consistent manner that avoids glycogen spikes and delivers a smoother energy experience that helps cut down cravings and vicious junk-food circles, so to speak.

Also, the more processed a food is, typically the less vitamins, minerals, fibre, phytochemicals and so forth it contains, all things the body needs and even craves. And there's a natural tendency to eat when one feels a lack of something, which can be some or all of those things above.

  • Hmm, you mean like the Iron Chef school of themed cook-offs?

Offhand I'd guess it's similar to what happened to channels like TLC & History. They discovered that by adding more shock, drama, and drifting from pure fact, they reeled in more viewers over time.

I'm old enough to remember the Julia Child-era of cooking shows, which was just straight cooking technique in which the chef was relatively interesting if you were in to cooking, but not memorable if you were neutral. Later chefs like Wilson and Emeril LaGasse were clear personality upgrades that could catch more neutrals. And so it goes...

  • Mon gars, he’s de patron saint of something, ah tell yuh whut, cher. <3

"Dangit, Peg, I'm feelin' left out, here..."

  • These remind me of the PBS cooking show conducted by the late, hilarious Justin Wilson of Louisiana.

He would use these terms all the time, then add in whatever the hell he was feeling at the time. Plus a couple splashes of wine for good measure, meanwhile sampling the bottle as he cooked. :D

  • butter honey

I'm always learning things around these-here parts. 😮

Normally they went bad before ripe

Back East we had some kind of apple trees in which the fruit never properly ripened, then went all Johnny Rotten. I'm not much of a sweets maker / baker, but baking the suckers seemed to work okay in apple pies and whatnot.

  • You lost all that in about a decade or two.

On the surface, yeah, but I'd argue that the plan to remove civil rights had been underway for ~50yrs before. And more than that, it's also been a recurring theme that dates back to before the very founding of the country, via slavery, genocide and so forth.

  • Turritopsis dohrnii

    Hah! Oh yeah.

Meanwhile, look at the current, toxic bag of billionaires, thinking that their useful response to self-inflicted civilisational collapse will be retiring to their underground 'paradises,' with their medical teams dedicated to lengthening their telomere situation, harvesting organs to preserve their egotistical, pathetic lives, and similar shizzle I.e. Logans' Run, but without the actual sun involved. But indeed a dome-involved, kinda-sorta.

(and actually, that whole scenario would pretty-quickly turn absolutely sadistic and chaotic for them as I reckon it, but whatever)

NOTE-- I'm having a mixed drink at the moment, and am a bit keyed up upon latest health frustration, so caveat emptor. :S

Question-- do your felines ever mess with your galliformes, and vice-versa? I remember you saying that the hens were overall a mildly-behaving crew, but if there's one thing I know, it's that cats like to fuck with things, and chickens can be absolutely peckingly-brutal upon... a load of other things.

  • Huh! Interesting, stepped furniture design, as approved by a meower I see. And that huge egg is bloody-well genius. (how do you decide the abundant amount of meowers are allowed inside, I wonder)

Slightly-related-- back in my old group-house, I used to have this awesome, super-thick, ruddy-earthy plate with ornate Chinese characters and engraved, elaborate figures. It stood on a little stand, but turns out was not a plate at all, but actually a solid block of Tea. :D

(dunno where you are now, Gary Chandler, but you the best!)

  • I don't post here as much as I should, partly because my plating / photos are typically underwhelming, but also because I find your china bloody-well genius. Like every photo a new, gorgeous set used. oO

    Damn you, FP, damn you.

    :P

  • Carry the Zero! <3

  • If only my dumb arse could learn from people like you. 😑

  • Excellent work. Always fascinating to see how major strips start off.

I still have to get to more of those early Schulz strips. Mainly just quality-control and formatting issues.

  • Awesome bit of digging! I'd never seen those earlier strips of his, and I've seen a lot of comics in my life.

Garfield is bored, John is emotional, Garfield is bored

That's indeed one of the strip templates that renders Garfield almost unreadable to me. One character's completely absorbed in laziness, jadedness and aloofness, and one character is completely, inanely over the top as a counterpoint. That generally doesn't entertain me, and I can't relate to them, but then that's just me.

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

What are some songs that make you feel so good that you're downright /scared/ to listen to a band's other music, for fear of being let down?
