  • The latter is not universal. Several popes have explicitly stated that they are indeed fallible (which would render total infallibility self-contradictory). Also, infallibility is generally limited in certain ways that I won't bother researching in enough depth to put into a concise description. But the pope can't just make up some random shit and have it automatically considered to be the word of God.

    Of course, pointing out that someone violates the basic tenets of Catholicism while naming those specific tenets is well within "the pope is right" territory.

  • Here's one for a TV show.

    In 2022, a crack quality assurance team was made redundant by a CTO for a botched product launch they didn't commit.

    These men promptly escaped from a maximally unstable job market to the LinkedIn underground.

    Today, still wanted by recruiters, they survive as soldiers of fortune.

    If you have a broken codebase, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the QA-team.

  • Struwwelpeter is a mixed bag.

    There's the story about the boy who starves to death because he refuses to eat soup. Or the girl who plays with matches and burns to death while her cats helplessly watch. Or the boy who sucks his thumbs so a tailor randomly shows up and cuts them off.

    And those are mixed in with the guy whose extremely bad grooming habits make him unpopular or the guy who doesn't watch where he's going and falls in a river. Not quite as traumatizing.

  • It's known that AI companies will harvest content without care for its veracity and train LLMs on it. These LLMs will then regurgitate that content as fact.

    This isn't a particularly novel finding but the experiment illustrates it rather well.

    The researchers you consider to have acted so immorally did add useless information to the knowledge pool – but it was unadvertised, immediately recognizable useless information that any sane reviewer would've flagged. They included subtle clues like thanking someone at Starfleet Academy for letting them use a lab aboard the USS Enterprise. They claimed to have gotten funding from the Sideshow Bob Foundation. Subtle.

    By providing this easily traceable nonsense, they were able to turn the generally-but-informally known understanding that LLMs will repeat bullshit into a hard scientific data point that others can build on. Nothing world-changing but still valuable. They basically did what Alan Sokal did.

    Instead of worrying about this experiment you should worry about all the misinformation in LLMs that wasn't provided (and diligently documented) by well-meaning researchers.

  • There are also some subtle variations in agnosticism.

    There's the soft variety that says "there is no proof that convinces me either way but I won't rule out that someone could come up with one".

    There's the hard variety that says "I don't think it's possible to prove either way".

    There's even a variety that says "it doesn't matter whether (a) god exists or not, hence there's no need for a proof".

    But yeah, the core of agnosticism is that you don't believe the existence of (a) god has been conclusively proven or disproven and are unwilling to commit either way without that proof.

  • I am kinda giving them shit for when someone pointed out that they're essentially storing PII completely unsecured and their response was "you should use app isolation anyway". That is not a good security model.

  • Okay, new scheme: Every continental shield is a continent. Everything not on one is terra incognita. Continental platforms are just delusional sea floor.

    Certainly that classification won't lead to any confusion.

  • Jumping Cubes is the kind of game that works really well on a PC and has super simple rules but is absolute hell in real life.

    That game on the Risk board was fun, though. IIRC North America in particular tended to have those terrible chain reactions that just kept going and going.

  • In addition to what has been mentioned already, Garuda is an Arch derivative where convenience is the whole point. No install scripts, just your usual live ISO with a Calamares installer plus a bunch of convenience utilities once you're set up.

    It's not exactly lightweight by default but it does make for a very comfortable Arch experience.

  • Of course LISP machines didn't crash the hardware market and make up 50 % of the entire economy. Other than that it's, as Shirley Bassey put it, all just a little bit of history repeating.

  • I'm just waiting for their reaction when everyone is supposed to use cloud desktops and the average application assumes the user has 128 GB of RAM.

  • The logic behind it is that a smartphone-bound passkey represents two factors of authentication: what you have (the phone) and who you are (the fingerprint used to unlock the phone's passkey store).

    Anything on a PC is easily copied and can only ever be safely assumed to represent one factor: what you know (the password to unlock your password manager). Thus the benefit of getting a two-factor authentication in one convenient step falls away.

    Of course it's still super annoying, especially if you don't really trust your smartphone OS vendor and use a portable password manager already.

  • I also often see implementations where there's a first step where you have to select how to log in. It's an extra click but very clear (and usually one of the options is some form of SSO where that one click fully logs you in if you already have a session open).

  • My company uses Entra ID (or whatever they've renamed it to this week) and it's a pretty common sight in our login flow. I think our SharePoint instance does it so it should be something MS does.

    Of course it all depends on w how the company configures it.

  • Passkeys are supposed to be bound to one device and protected by that device's OS's secure enclave. If you have a second device you're supposed to create a second passkey.

    That's why many sites will flat out refuse to let you create a passkey with a desktop browser since a PC-stored passkey doesn't fit the security model.

  • It's not like you can't add a "Log in with your company's SSO" button to the form. That works just fine and at least Microsoft does something like that.

  • Processor architectures maybe. They put Rust into Debian and it's so bad that now e.g. amd64 is ruined forever for any OS and won't see any new processors in the future. We'll have to move to a different architecture. I didn't watch the video since I treasure my brain cells too much but that's what I choose to read into it.

    (A more reasonable reading is that Debian now ships a kernel that includes Rust code and coincidentally has also dropped builds for several obscure architectures but I do not feel obliged to assume reason with a title and thumbnail like that.)
