  • I like the idea, but I have two questions about using a phone here:

    1. We know that older phones don't get updates and is it really wise to put a unpatchable server on the internet?
    2. What about the battery? We know that constantly charging an old battery is not that great.
  • New tech used to be really exciting. Engadget started as a gadget blog talking about the newest gadgets doing cool things. MP3 players, cameras, companies trying cool things. That category totally evaporated and reading about the newest smartphone or app with a subscription sucks

  • Yeah - if there was a villain, we could build companies without villains. But since entshittification seems to be endemic, you can't trust anybody. That nice cool startup claiming to "don't be evil"? Wait a few years, change out some people and it will totally be doing evil things.

  • You are so correct - that article is a typical example of all the propaganda going around during a war. And yes, we know that Barron will never fight in a war, but that article is propaganda.

  • for eternity

    hardware built by Spotify

    At max 2-3 years

  • Just to give you an example on how Europe is doing that: Licence plates are personal data. If you want to use them, you need the consent of users. Which you can't get from drivers on a public street.

  • It is sadly becoming the standard in business settings. If your IT department is setting Edge as standard, there is not a lot that you can do

  • Yeah, I know.

  • We have this audiobook player for children in my country. That works by buying those little figures and if you place them on the player, the audiobook plays. I think that a system like that for "adult music" would be awesome. Buy some little figures and art pieces by your favorite band, display them on a shelf and use them to play music? Yeah, that would be awesome

  • And everybody who invests such money wants it back. With interest. They are currently trying to shove it everywhere, integrate it into workflows and the skillset of everybody and then they want all this money back and more.

  • Can you explain for everybody who doesn't want to fly into the USA to visit a coal town in Montana what one will see there?

  • I quit commercial Social Media and am only here and on Mastodon. So I'm not spending my time at Facebook, X, TikTok and so on anymore where they can show me ads and make money from them. I've moved most of my online stuff to a selfhosted solution and switched my computers to Linux.

The most impactful thing is something different, however: I put solar on my roof. Most of my power consumption is now from solar, which means that all those texan oil barons, saudi sheiks and russian dictators that are funding Trump, are getting less money from me. That are over 1000€ every year that I'm saving and that is not going into their pockets. And it is good for the environment, too!

  • So that kind of means that the high-end AAA PC market will crash in the next years, right? No new GPUs, production stop for existing GPUs and rising prices for GPU & RAM in combination with inflation and a bad economy ensure that many people can't afford a gaming computer. And that a lot of those younger gamers can't afford to start this hobby.

And that means a shrinking audience for games, which need all this GPU power. If you're an AAA publisher, it kind of looks crazy to invest multiple millions into a game that you can't be sure that your audience will be able to afford to play

  • That's so wrong. They might have failed for now, but we'll see them trying again. And again. Google is the worlds most valuable ad company. They earn billions every year by showing people ads and adblockers are costing them several billions every year. They will come back and they will try again.

  • If you have Android, you can install Firefox and use uBlock Origin there. It's awesome :)

  • Let's be honest: The internet without adblock is unusable. I really do not know how all those people without adblock are doing that.

  • The best thing about this is that it enables you to stop organizing all this paper. I have a little box next to my scanner and everything that is scanned is just getting put on top of the pile. In most cases you never need the original document anyways. But if you need it, you can check Paperless when it was scanned and you will find that document from Feb 2023 in a few seconds.

  • You are correct and incorrect at the same time. Yes, nobody should trust Meta. But Meta should also be dragged into every court available for their lies.

  • To make this clear: Patreon is a platform mainly used by creators, artists, musicians to get a reliable income directly from their fans. Apple is trying to steal 30% of the income of our favorite artists.
