  • Hey welcome to the hobby!

    We personally have the whole TV on a Vlan, so it can't acces anything at all. While our server/HA can still send a WOL command to it, and jellyfin can stream our movies to it. I run all of it on top of TrueNas, most as an app or else an VM.

    I have never tried to set something up for YouTube specifically, since that runs on a Chromecast (for now...)

  • Subscriptions aren't the only sustainable model. Linux, Blender, VLC are actively maintained without requiring every user to pay a recurring fee. They rely mostly on donations, or one-time funding. And it works

    A subscription may be a good model for some apps where they have high user-level server cost. But anywhere else I refuse

    You ask it to play music, it says "ok" and then just do nothing at all.

    And these days it has the nifty AI stuff in it to. So it hallucinates some answers too!

    But it's all relative. For example Patrion would be a much better way of supporting a creator

  • A battery is energy per volume.

    So instead of buying a big battery, we have a small one and all the devices go along with it. The house and water is heated when the battery is charging. And the setpoint is lowered when energy is expensive.

    This extends our our "battery capacity" without the investment into more electrical batteries
