On a Hacker News thread, someone claiming to be an AI company CEO said a tarpit like this is easy to avoid; Aaron B told 404 Media “If that’s, true, I’ve several million lines of access log that says even Google Almighty didn’t graduate” to avoiding the trap.

  • You'd have to show who specifically was yelling. You see everyone from all instances they're federated with. They might not have even been from Lemmy.world.

  • I think you're drastically underestimating how even small steps like that can tune a ton of people out. If they're only sort of on the fence about it it might be enough to make it not worth it. Or maybe they'll think they'll check later but never get around to it.

  • Yeah, same. I sort of vaguely remember it as a kid. I had this saved on my computer from somewhere and saw it while making my Lemmy account. What's cool is that it is actually animated on some platforms.

  • Just made an account on Xiaohongshu and saw literally no Chinese during the process other than the logo. The first Chinese I saw were the titles of videos.

    This was the first I saw. But by then, my account is already made and I can already see and enjoy content. I don't think it's as much of a barrier as you believe it is.
