  • With TikTok, if you copy and paste the URL into a browser you will get a link you can then copy and paste without the baked-in tracking. You can probably do the same with Instagram, but I just got a link from them and they had the tracking under a query parameter (that's the technical term for the stuff after the question mark). So I'm not sure what you're seeing.

    Also, thank you for stripping tracking data off of links you share. "It ain't much, but it's honest work!"

    https://www.tiktok.com/t/aaaa becomes https://www.tiktok.com/@someuser/video/111 (manually remove tracking as before). I assume this might work with Instagram, but like I said, when I try it, it doesn't actually give me that style URL.

  • It wouldn't make carbon monoxide less poisonous to us, but depending on how sensitive the sensation of suffocation is made it would help us realize something is wrong and maybe even eliminate the need for carbon monoxide detectors.

    Carbon monoxide isn't only dangerous because it's not oxygen, but because it disrupts our blood's normal process of absorbing oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide. My laymen understanding is that it sort of jams the door lol. As opposed to things like nitrogen which merely gets in the way but don't disrupt the process.

    Imagine if instead of getting a headache and feeling sleepy when carbon monoxide was in your body you started to feel like you were holding your breath too long.

  • Here is a real order from DoorDash recently. The post is exaggerating, but it is definitely a lot once you add all the cost of the fees and tip (spare me snide comments about American tipping culture and just view it as another weird fee we have to pay).

  • A lot of it is about latency too. You're paying to have someone go get it right now and take it to you right now. Post services pick up stuff daily and get it there over the course of a week or so depending on where exactly it's going. If you were paying someone to come to you, pick it up, drive it straight to where it's going, well, it'd be faster, but cost a ton more.

  • Well, maybe not with regex, but I'd be lying if I said I never get satisfaction things like that lol. Bash and regex both are very useful tools, great at what they do, but have some design choices that make them annoying. That's sort of what I was trying to get at by saying "yes but also skill issue" lol. A good example is iterating over output in bash. I have zero confidence it's going to do anything remotely close to what I want and have to look up stuff every time I'm trying to do it. "Is it going to go word by word? Line by line? Are there null byte separators?" PowerShell seems appealing in that regard because it works with objects instead of text, but I haven't really used it in depth and I don't see myself going through it just to see if it's worth trying to use more often.

  • You think email's UI is only "slightly" different than the UI of chats? I disagree very strongly. The two are extremely different. Email is this weird amalgamation of messages and forums depending on how your client displays it and everyone in the email thread is using it. You can have arbitrarily styling in messages. You can send messages to whoever whenever. Chats are much more focused and linear by comparison.
