Any pronouns. 33.

Professional developer and amateur gardener located near Atlanta, GA in the USA.

I'm using a new phone keyboard, please forgive typos.

  • I've never heard the phrase but I'm 10000% positive that's what it means.

  • I'd rather learn from slightly unreliable teachers than teachers who belittle me for asking questions.

  • New copy pasta just dropped

  • I've found questions about niche tools tend to get worse answers. I was asking if some stuff about jpackage and it couldn't give me any working suggestions or correct information. Stuff I've asked about Docker was much better.

  • I feel you, but I've asked it why questions too.

  • Quality content as usual. I appreciate the thought you've put into this and agree with your reasoning.

    1. Stop making blanket claims about instances you like or dislike, no matter how fair you feel they may be, and don't fall for the bait of others doing it. This is just drama and is exhausting to read about.
    2. Instead of suggesting people "join Lemmy", say things like "Join Lemmy at programming.dev" (or whatever instance you yourself are using). Sure, "but picking a server is hard" will always probably be a complaint, but leading with the one you personally use is the best way around it. If you're on a hobby focused instance (like I am) then maybe suggest a generic instance to people outside of your hobby. Don't be afraid to suggest lemmy.world. It's better to suggest the biggest instance than endlessly debate about which one is the best to suggest.
  • I did not. Maybe there was a delay due to federation stuff making it seem like that. Or maybe you edited it after I loaded the page but before I posted.

  • It's true and it's such a distraction. There is so much worse shit going on right now in the US government. I'm tired of not calling it a coup. It's a coup. They're trying to act like the judicial branch doesn't get to determine what is and isn't constitutional. So much shit.

As bad and as cringe as it is for the "Gulf of America" debacle to happen, it's just genuinely not worth the headspace right now.

  • Yeah, with the Canada and Mexico ones already being cancelled that tracks. Supposedly he's making an announcement regarding tariffs at 1 PM Eastern today (in 20 minutes) so who knows.

  • Pretend you blocked me. Below is sort of what it looks like in their UI. Personally I like it this way.

    • Other user: Heyyy

    • Jackby: Good morning
    • Jackby: How is everyone?

    • Other user: Good!

This is for group chats. Blocking still prevents DMs.

  • This is lended to by the fact that in children's books and schools in the USA Edison was portrayed as some magical fictional character who tied a key to a kite to invent electricity.

That story is associated with Benjamin Franklin.

  • Doesn't that the site get a lot of flak though?

  • Okay, so, being incredibly generous here, I sort of get their point, but why not slowly ramp tariffs up to allow domestic production to catch up? Because fuck you, that's why.

And, as always, none of any of the false promises of prosperity excuse any of the hate Trump spreads.

  • Assuming Luigi Mangione is responsible for the murder of that CEO strips him of his presumption of innocence. Maybe refer to the gunman from the video as "The Adjuster" like people did before Mangione was accused until the trial is complete.

  • I hate news articles so much. "The (underlined) Associated Press said" ahh, this must be a link to the actual quote, I'll read that. Nope! Just a link to their website. At least it's not as bad as other sites that link to other random articles.

  • Rare zshell L

  • I know. But in the alternate reality where we'd been using 1-based indices forever you'd be telling me how useful it is that the first element is "1" instead of zero and I'd be saying there are some benefits to using zero based index because it's more like an offset than an index.

  • Yeah, but if we went back and time and changed it then there wouldn't be other stuff relying on it being 0-based.
