  • Small point of order, there was an option to disable it, but it was extremely hidden and buried in the advanced settings area and called "enabling toxic mode". Also, this only disabled the runtime policy. There was no way for end users to disable the instance list that was in the source code itself.

  • I don't know what the difference between foo([0-9]+)? and foo[0-9]* is. Is this just an instance of wonky code or is there actually a reason to prefer the first?

  • Yeah, that's my point. The Cybertruck seems heavily inspired by the nostalgia of the Delorean and people forgetting the problems. It's easy to think that they were considered cool by watching Back to the Future, but they were considered junkers, and that's even how it's meant to be viewed by Doc using it.

  • I have none. My client, Jerboa, doesn't support it. I personally don't feel the need. If someone has a negative interaction with me, it's either negative enough that I remember their name, or small enough of a deal that I don't want it affecting the way I interact with them in the future. Generally if someone is that bad, I block them.

  • All of this shit falls flat when the dev themself admits they hid the feature to disable deep in the app and even called it "toxic mode". Is saying "perchance" toxic? Because that's one of their blocked phrases. Fuck no, it's not. This is just shit the personally dislike and put it in under the guise of making the fediverse more normie friendly.

    As if silently hiding content with phrases like "perchance" and causing a massive drama makes the fediverse more normie friendly.

  • You may like this VSauce video about this topic called The Future of Reasoning. I spent a lot of time in 2020 and 2021 arguing with people online about covid and election fraud. I was under the impression that if someone just calmly, gently, respectfully laid out why they were wrong they'd accept it. I mean, for goodness's sake, one of the claims I responded to was someone saying something about X number of people voted in some county but there aren't that many people registered there. I told them it's easy to debunk and that I just searched Google for the county's official website and voter registration numbers and, as expected, they were different and higher than the number of people who voted. You wanna know what their response was? "Google is biased." Even though the information wasn't from Google, that's just how I found the site. (And I probably even used duckduckgo but didn't want to explain that lmao, point still stands.)

    This video came to me after I'd already made the conscious decision to just stop doing it for my own mental health. It was really impactful.

    Perhaps the most ironic (or unironic) thing is that had I seen this before I had that experience, I may have disagreed with the video.

  • Assuming this is a real post and not satire, my best guess is that they don't think it's a bottleneck, but still believe a way to talk to the computer without disturbing others in the office is useful. Like if Tide detergent said it would save your marriage -- they don't think it really will, but the ad is humourous and likely to gain attention because of it.

  • If you're still in college, try to get an internship. Once you have something on your resume, it's a lot easier to get into places. Plus try to network and stuff. Getting recommended by someone is much more likely to result in an interview.

    The AI shit is really rocking the boat right now, but ultimately I don't think it's sustainable. I don't know what the future of dev work will look like or when it'll balance out, but right now, these AI agents are effectively heavily subsidized by investors. At some point, they'll need to either turn to the public (IPO) as a last resort, or actually begin to turn a profit. I think this happened with Microsoft's Copilot. "Tokenpocalypse" was the term that got thrown around. They can't undercharge for this stuff forever.

    Even if AI does end up being a significant part of work, actually knowing how to code will make you better at using it. Your skills aren't useless. You'll be better at noticing when the agents make shitty code or shitty decisions. If agentic development ends up being too costly for everyday use, you'll still be able to assist with "manual" code writing.

    AI companies over hype their products and say they're world shattering as a way of marketing. They say the idea of developers are over because they want people to invest and buy their product. Agentic coding has gotten pretty fucking impressive in the past few months, but something's gonna break at some point. The bill always comes due.

    But yeah. Internship and networking. Learn AI, but don't eschew traditional development practices entirely.
