    The scenario described is illustrating how lobsided small states' electoral votes are. With 22% of the popular vote a candidate can with the electoral vote. Their opponent gets the other 78% of the popular vote.

    It's always an air-quotes "win" of the popular vote in America because we don't use the popular vote to determine the winner.

  • I definitely saw someone named "TripleK" (not a euphemism, it wasn't KKK) playing Secret Hitler on Board Game Simulator. They kept saying a bunch of racist shit. I remember saying "it's called Secret Hitler, not obvious Hitler" lol. I tried reporting their account but don't remember what happened.

    That's the only time I can ever specifically remember seeing someone being anti semitic on Steam. (Not saying it doesn't happen more.)

  • 3D gaming has plateaued as well. While it may be possible to make better graphics, those graphics don’t make better games.

    I haven't played it, only seen clips, but have you seen AstroBoy? It's true that the graphics aren't really too much better than the PS4, but there's like a jillion physics objects on the screen with 60fps. It's amazing. Graphics are still improving, just in different ways.

  • What? No. lol. Tech is still improving. You're just thinking of the bad new stuff and good old stuff. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. Phone's batteries and resolutions are much better than they were in 2014. Voice assistants never really took off. Smart home stuff is maaaaybe a little better now but there are also a shit ton more brands now and most are crap. But that also means cheaper and more widespread.

  • I feel like you're dealing with some problems and blaming them on different things. Being stinky as a child and your mother not allowing you to wash yourself is something totally unrelated to going to the grocery store versus using a delivery service.

    Idk, it seems like you're really upset. Tone doesn't come across well on the Internet and I can tell this thread has you defensive already, so let me be clear when I say that me saying you're upset isn't me trying to somehow dismiss things you're saying because you're emotional. I know that sometimes when I get very upset and emotional, I have a tendency to see things as connected when they're not. Even when I know I'm being overly paranoid I can't help it. It appears as if you're very upset about the way your mother has treated you and you're expressing frustration about it. None of us can know what you've been through. It sounds like you're trying to express a lifetime of anger in a few comments. It's just not going to come across clearly.

    When you say "how can people not want to improve their lives" with the context of what you'vw just said, it sounds more like you're lamenting that your parents didn't let you properly bathe yourself. But without this context, it just sounds like you're just being angry at people for frivolous things like choosing to go to the store instead of using a delivery service. (And there are plenty of reasons to want to actually go in person.) It sounds as if you have gotten into a million arguments with your mother during your childhood about these sorts of things. Now, I'm really only guessing here, but it sounds like you're seeing it all as connected. You're seeing the abuse (?) your mother put you through by not letting you bathe as "someone refusing to improve their life" and perhaps equating it to arguments you've had with your mother about using delivery services so save money. But your mother not allowing you to bathe/not providing you with what you needed to bathe as a child isn't your mother "refusing to improve her/your life", it's neglect.

    Because it sounds like you're processing some issues, I don't think an Ask Lemmy thread is the right place to do it. Because when you accuse folks of going to the grocery store instead of using deliveries or criticize their methods of doing laundry/taking out garbage, it just sounds like you're being an asshole.

  • The idea that only your own mind is certain to exist is solipsism. I think I sort of get what OP is saying. That because words don't mean something outside of human brains they're solipsistic.

    But I disagree because the fact that someone else wrote it means it isn't solipsistic. If you believe in solipsism (I don't) then everything is in your own mind, not merely certain parts.

    If you don't believe in solipsism, then you acknowledge the external world exists so it's specifically a form of communication. It feels odd to believe in the external world but look at communication, something we've specifically developed to transmit our internal thoughts to others, and call it solipsistic when it wouldn't exist if we believed there was no other hidden information inside other "people's" minds (or whatever solipsists believe people are).

  • Alright, I found the name of what I was thinking of that sounds similar to what they're suggesting: generative adversarial network (GAN).

    The core idea of a GAN is based on the "indirect" training through the discriminator, another neural network that can tell how "realistic" the input seems, which itself is also being updated dynamically. This means that the generator is not trained to minimize the distance to a specific image, but rather to fool the discriminator. This enables the model to learn in an unsupervised manner.

  • When I said a "general purpose model that knows what children look like" I didn't mean the classification model from the article. I meant a normal, general purpose image generation model. When I said "that knows what children look like" I mean part of its training set is on children, because it's sort of trained a little on everything. When I said "pornographic model" I mean a model trained exclusively on NSFW content (and not including any CSAM, but that may be generous depending on how much care was out into the model's creation).
