  • I lived in the Midwest too.

    The Midwest voted to be left alone, especially for culture war issues.

    The southwest voted to get rid of mexicans.

    The Mid-Atlantic voted for culture war issues mostly.

    The south voted to hurt people, just like they have in literally every election for 200 years. This is literally the region that fought a war for slavery, lost, and kept it anyway under a different name for 100 years, there ain't no shame in their game.

    Look at the margins, the south voted trump by a crazy landslide.

    The small town in the Midwest I lived in was beautiful in the 1980s, then in the 90s nafta kicked in and we were infested by southerners moving north for jobs, bringing their drugs and crime with them.

    They're a plague, and they're spreading.

    I like it because I basically can build a terminal and ssh back home with my bluetooth keyboard in my bag, but otherwise it's basically useless, except for watching youtube sometimes.

    When the trifold come out they might be worth it, that's a proper tablet really.

    edit: Ok, 1 killer use-case: When your eyes start going, they're a godsend.

    But ... the modern culture is... sad? Like a horrible cheap 70s ripoff of capitalism, but in a mean way.

    For the modern culture, I recommend Taiwan heartily.

  • No, 80s were hardcore taiwan and south korea for crappy toys, maybe Japan early on.

    Even the early 90s were Taiwan and SK, then China came in and swallowed everything whole.

    They don't care much about quality, but they have the data (the critical part) to improve quality anyway, with a fraction of the zealous dedication Japan applied.

    A database that shows 1 part always fails for a specific reason is hard to argue against, just change that part.

    They're broken in a very fundamental way, a sad way. There are good people there, but also a lot of sociopaths.

    Shanghai is a wonder of the world though, I recommend everyone visit, truly beautiful.
