  • I mean yes, but the real disenfranchisement comes from making sure the lines are hours long for the only polling station in your county (while every suburban school is a polling station in rich neighborhoods).

    We had laws against that (not that they were followed), but the Supreme Court struck them down because "they weren't needed anymore".

    It was just added because it was the only way to launder slave votes for slave states, if you did it 1 vote per person then who got to choose who the slaves voted for?

    We need to fix it, but there's no way in hell they'll give up their most precious possession, no matter how wrong it is.

    And oil is oil, it's self-powering. Many/most are powered off of the propane out-gassing to dedicated turbines.

  • Read the first book, wasn't impressed yet, I think it's just so different than the expanse.

    Also not a lot of room for setting, they're kind of stuck until the plot shifts. Overall depressing too.

  • Greek and Roman mythologies are almost the same, and they spread throughout all their conquered lands because they enforced their religion upon them, and any foreign religion was subsumed as 'oh, that's just another name for jupiter or something'.

    The Greeks and Romans left so many written records and the Greek language is still alive, while Latin is well understood.

    Hindu mythology also stayed very firmly alive, but only among people in India, and nobody else cared. Buddhism doesn't have the same kind of mythology, and it's different depending on where you go, and even the local politics (actually so is hindu mythology, it's basically the marvel comics universe but where each village priest makes up a few minor gods for themselves). China and Japan do have their own, pre-buddhist mythology, we see that a lot in anime.

    Native American mythology was killed, a few times, by disease, violence, but mostly brutal Christianity.

    Finally the Norse gods spent some time in England and Europe, after the Romans and Greeks, so they have some presence where they were considered interesting.

    Mostly, English-centric literature and media, and literature students study it EXTENSIVELY for their degree, basically as a deconstruction of the evolution of storytelling and underlying tropes/archetypes. Less of this spread from elsewhere.

  • So, trying not to dox myself, I worked with the architect twice.

    Knights Ferry was derived directly from Larrabee (GPU), P54Cs with pre-AVX-512, .

    KNC was a die shrink with more cores. Both of these were PCIe accelerators only.

    KNL had full Airmont Atom cores with smt4, basically meaningful cores with proper AVX-512. Also you could boot them with linux, or as a PCIe accelerator.

    KNM jadded ML instructions, basically 8/16bit float and faster SIMD.

    They cancelled KNH.

    I interviewed some of the actual Larrabee guys, they were wild, there was a lot of talk about dynamic translation, they were trying to do really complex things, but when people talk like that it makes me think they were floundering on the software and just looking for tech magic solutions to fundamental problems.

    Intel always dies when the software gets more complex than really simple drivers, it's their achilles heel.

    KNL also had the whole MCDRAM on package for basically HBM bandwidth, but that didn't actually work very well in practice, again due to software issues (you have to pick where you allocate, and using it as an l4 cache was not always effective).

  • Oof, yeah, they actually had another they didn't release, based off pentium cores with avx512, basically knights landing with software support for graphics.

    They were canceling projects like it was going out of style, which is sad, that would have been amazing for Ai.

    But this is why we transitioned to crossbows from longbows, takes a lifetime of training to make a good longbowman.

    Then again, not like they had anything better to do.
