  • Ah, that could be the case I guess. But it's not that i had a feeling of inconsistency: it's just that I could understand how someone may see "violence is unacceptable" followed by "but glad he's dead" to be disingenuous or some form of hypocrisy without thinking much about it; wouldn't be the first time that I've had such a discussion.

A shortcut to understanding would be: I'd feel the same way if he had been killed by terminal cancer. I hate cancer, and I'd rather we lived in a world without it, and I'd have empathy for him and those who know him. But such a person being gone would still tip the cosmic scales towards a less hateful and othering world. Doesn't make it right, doesn't mean he deserved it, doesn't mean I'd cheer for cancer.

  • I loved it when I learned that "movfuscation" was possible. Sort of an intuitive proof for Turing completeness.

  • Normally people quote something like that when they're trying to point out something damning or draw attention to something that's internally inconsistent... Is that what you mean?

  • The sanewashing I've seen is wild. People crawling out of the woodwork to yap about him being a martyr for dialogue. Saw someone say "we sent a messenger and they shot him"... Aside from the fact that we know nothing about the shooter or their motive, buddy: have you seen the 'message'? Because, yikes. I don't think he deserved being killed and i condemn such violence, but i must acknowledge that the world is a better place; that's just how the cookie crumbles when you live life as a morally bankrupt promoter of abject evil.

  • As someone who has done a lot of stuff with LLMs: this is a completely, unironically, real (and dare I say: likely) possibility. Except it just has to be gaslit into thinking it was given a bribe; you don't actually need to give it one...

  • Way too fucking close

  • Yeah and the bang bus stands as a symbol for celibacy

  • Pfft come on. I watched ISIS beheading videos when I was a kid and I turned out just f-.... Hm.

  • Computer silicon and transformer models

  • Modern magic. We tricked crystals into thinking by drugging them and zapping them with electricity. Then we used those crystals to trick matricies into hallucinating by forcing them to guess the answer to math questions and smacking them when they get it wrong and kept doing that until they get it right. Ethics and hype aside, it's pretty fucking wild.

  • AFAIK, nope. There are several personal projects which modify Signal to work on private infrastructure rather than use signal's centralized service, but nothing intended for public consumption or at least not that I've heard of. Maybe search it.

Signal is good enough and has been pushing for more mainstream appeal and polish (e.g. gif search) Its Achilles heel and main drawbacks stem from it's centralization: needing a phone number and routing thru Signal's infra. But that can also benefits them in some ways. Most devs who would be tempted to change that would rather spend their time elsewhere: tox, matrix, i2p, tor, xmpp and irc shenanigans, etc. Signal is just hydrated, in its lane, unbothered; chugging along as its LLC dictates. No alarms, no fires, no compelling reason to do a hard fork.

Edit: it completely slipped my mind that Molly exists. So yeah there's that. But they still use signal's infra.

  • AGPL iirc. it can be forked and run independently or modified into a decentralized federation model. So doesn't really matter if they cave.

  • No thanks

  • TELL ME ABOUT GAY SEX DAMN IT! DESCRIBE IT TO ME IN VIVID DETAIL! LEAVE NOTHING OUT!

  • I'd like to congratulate drugs for winning the war on drugs, terror for winning the war on terror, and disease for winning the war on disease. We've truly outdone ourselves this time. What an impressive lineup. A round of applause, ladies and gentlemen.

  • TL;DR killed cuz it wasn't popular enough

  • "Wow these demographics are wild... My social media platform OnlyFeds is completely flooded with preteen girls and violent anarchists... wtf?"
