  • It's more advantageous to seek a new job while still employed. New employer will have to at least match what you get at your current job to lure you away. A friend who does hiring for his company told me he avoids hiring anyone who's been out of work for six months. That's how long unemployment benefits last in our state. He reasoned someone who milks it for every penny before looking for a new job is lazy

  • American Greetings. Their corporate headquarters was in Cleveland next door to a thriving drive in theater. It was good cheap entertainment for families in a city full of low income families. AG bought the drive in and demolished it, rebuilding a landscaped corporate park in its place. Ten years later they moved.

  • I got my first "home computer" for Christmas in the early 80's. A TRS-80 CoCo with 16k RAM. After sending in the warranty information I started receiving nerd junk mail some of which I'm pretty sure I still have somewhere. One is an add for internet access from Compuserve. It cost $7 an hour IIRC. You had to use dial up and call long distance to Columbus, OH which probably cost somewhere around 50 cents a minute using my 1200 baud modem. Young teenage me couldn't afford the luxury. I also received a slender book of websites. Domain names weren't a thing so you had to know the ip address of what you wanted to look up. BBS's were more accessible to me. Sometimes in the early 90's I fumbled around on a computer at the library and saw weather forecasts and another time I searched Lexusnexus for an article about modifying hand held GPS units to increase accuracy. The public wasn't allowed the accuracy the military had (US). By the time the internet caught on thanks to AOL I hadn't messed with computers for ten years but picked it right back up now with a 36.6k modem. I know this is going to sound gross but I remember some of the earliest news reports regarding the internet were about pervs using it to share child porn. Does anyone else remember this? BBS's were used by mob bookies to take gambling bets. IIRC the Supreme Court decided the owners were responsible for monitoring and preventing the mob from doing this. Obviously this was all quite awhile ago and my memory is fallible

  • Here in US i think it's more complicated than that. The farming is very large scale, most of the work is done by machinery. Some of the crops though need to be picked by hand. There is a migratory (within the US) workforce that moves to where the seasonal work is. Farm hands that sleep in a loft in the barn and see the crop through from seed to harvest isn't a thing. I learned this because I had friends who did this. Live in a tent, get paid for what you produce, move on to the next crop. No federal taxes, low cost of living. Apples in Washington, oranges in Florida, blueberries in Maine, clean fish in Alaska.I even met people who worked on crab boats and couldn't understand why it was so dangerous until I saw the TV show Dangerous Catch. Americans would rather work at Walmart. Immigrants will happily do it then head back home where the money they earned will go farther. NAFTA stole a lot of the agricultural work from Mexico, they're doing the same work just further from home. I don't know for sure but they may not be getting paid any less than an American that does the same job.

    Caveat: I garnered this information a long time ago and may be outdated. IMO US immigration laws need to be updated and enforced. Political polarization is making this impossible. Being honest about the situation is the first step.

  • When I was a kid back in the 70's there was a woman with a spider monkey who lived in the same trailer park as my grandfather. She rode around on a bike with it on her shoulder and would stop when my sister and I were visiting. We were never allowed to pet it, we'd watch while the lady fed it clovers.

  • Long time American beer drinker here. The craft breweries here brew some strange stuff these days. There are sooo many breweries now it's hard to stand out brewing something as simple as a porter. Now it has to be chocolate pecan graham cracker infused porter.
