  • Relationships come with boundaries and limits though, right? You're treating monogamy as ownership, but that's backwards. My partner free to have sexual relationships with whomsoever they want; however, they aren't free to have any relationship at all with me if that's a choice they make.

    I affirmatively chose my partner; when I made the choice for them, it meant that I made a choice to give up my sexual and romantic autonomy to pursue the relationship with them. I can take my autonomy back at any time, but if I do, I also permanently give up the relationship that I have; that is a boundary that they set, and I knew that when I chose the relationship.

    I have been in polyerotic/multiamorous relationships. What is lacking in them is depth. Building relationships takes time, and time is always more limited in poly relationships. The more partners you have, the shallower each relationship gets. Oh, yes, I know that poly people will say that love is infinite. And perhaps they're even correct. But the time you can spend with each person is very definitely finite.

  • I think that it's more complicated than that.

    Okay, so there's regulation. Who bears the cost of compliance? What happens when a sex worker is out of compliance with safety regulations, e.g., they are infected with HIV and aren't informing clients or using barriers? How do you handle that?

    Keep in mind that a lot of people turn to sex work on an irregular basis, to pay for rent, drugs, or similar; very few of them are going to willingly go through any kind of licensing process, and most will lack the ability to pay for a license.

  • I had a friend that made it through O-Hare and LaGuardia security with a 4" switchblade in her carry on; not a spring assist, an actual automatic knife, back when they were illegal almost everywhere, but after Sept. 11. Somehow security missed it both times.

    Meanwhile, I nearly missed a flight because someone running the x-ray machine didn't know what brass collar points were.

    I dunno. Sounds like he's not opposed to them, just doesn't think that they're effective without going after root-cause issues. (...Which, I would like to point out, is one of the huge fucking problems that people in favor of banning guns have. E.g., address the root causes of violence, and you stop the violence without curtailing the civil right.) He doesn't seem to have a problem with addressing the root causes so that there's no need for the laws in the first place, and doesn't appear to be arguing against the things he lists as being 'social ills' in the first place. (He did think that the youth of his time were declining morally, which is a tale that goes back to at least the Greek city-states.)

    Fundamentally though, yeah, laws alone rarely change behavior; you need to change the material and social conditions to change behavior.

  • I feel like a lot of people forget just how wildly different the time Heinlein was raised in was. He may have been wrong-headed in our current view about a fair amount of things--particular his work prior to the mid-60s or so--but that's a cultural issue, rather than someone that was pig-headedly stupid. The quote you have--"[...] forbidding gambling, sale of liquor, sale of contraceptives, requiring definite closing hours, enforcing the Sabbath [...]--is especially ironic because AFAIK Heinlein appears to have had open/polyamorous marriages (...or multiamorous/polyerotic, if you're a linguistic pedant); that sort of inclination should be quite antithetical to laws enforcing religious doctrine or sexual morality.

  • I have an earlier version of this (got it on sale from Costco, and it was the highest-rated model by Consumer Reports at the time); I love it. It's not great for carpets, but it's fast and easy for hardwood floors.

    Would I have bought it if it needed to connect to my cell phone? Absofuckinglutely not. Not in a million fucking years. It could have been the best goddamn vacuum in the world at sucking, powered by a miniature black hole, sucking dirt to the event horizon, and I still would have passed.

    ...Why would you? That's the right thing to do sometimes. We could have totally stayed on the sidelines in WWII in Europe, and only gone to war in the Pacific, because that shit was absolutely not our problem, right?

    We should, for instance, be intervening in Myanmar, and in Rojava. We should be protecting the Kurds--esp. since we said we would--from Syria and Turkiye. We should be helping the rebels in Myanmar, since they're just trying to get basic human rights from a dictatorial military regime.

    Does that mean that the US is perfect? Absofuckinglutely no. Not even close. Is capitalism great? Nope. Is authoritarian communism better? LOL, no.

  • Yes. I voted for her because there was no other viable option. Claiming that she's the best choice in primaries, for a 2028 presidential run is absolute nonsense. Running her again would be beyond stupid; it would be like running Clinton (Hilary, not Bill) a second time.

    Fuck sake, get someone that's a charismatic populist running on messages of, "hell yes, we're going to tax the shit out of billionaires, we're going to tax them until they're millionaires", with expansion of gov't services and de-privatization as major platform planks. Dems need a Project 2028 that lays all of this shit out on an eyes-only basis so they can get the majority of it through in the first 4 months, too. Not just unwinding the damage that Trump has done to the federal bureaucracy, but EXPANDING it, and hardening it against any future interference from the executive branch.
