  • I mean if people really want to go through that extra effort, let ‘em have it I say.

    1. Yes. A meme is a meme.
    2. No. Not all memes need to be funny or this would be !funny_memes
    3. news might be a meme I guess. Certainly some headlines and articles have become memes themselves.
    4. Non-text image… not really required, but it helps I guess.
    5. yes, absolutely.

I guess it depends what the community purpose is: should it be a breeding ground for potential new memes where some might hit and others miss? Or are only variations on well-established memes to be allowed?

(My 2¢: the light-touch moderation method is the correct one. You’re doing fine, no change needed)

  • What about non-image memes like “6-7” or the various stupid “xyz challenge”s?

  • Not an image macro, agreed.

“Creepy, possibly haunted doll” is definitely a meme though.

  • … it is.

  • usually a square image with optional text.

Thats an image macro which is a specific type of Internet meme. Although I’ve never heard of someone suggesting they must be square; that seems very odd. Are the meme police checking height:width ratios now?

  • Yeah… the difference is that one (sparrows) was just a bad idea due to a total misunderstanding of the problem. The sparrows weren’t the pests, the bugs they eat were.

The other (one child) is a good idea that was poorly managed due to unexpected cultural mores. Even so it would still be effective once people are “incentivized” to give up on the foolishness of prioritizing one sex over the other.

  • The one child policy really gonna be up there with killing all the sparrows long term...

Except that killing the sparrows was a bad idea.

  • That was a brilliant explanation, thank you.

para- and mono-phyletic were indeed the problem words. I can tell they are related to phylum but “phylum” doesn’t mean much to me except to know that it’s a word for some grouping of species.

The other part where I was snagged is the significance of cladistics and the new/old classification methods. I knew both terms as “words for groups of species and hadn’t dug further.

Between the family tree example and the diagram — got it, thanks to you and your sibling reply.

  • I kinda know what some of those words mean.

    Can I get a picture?

  • That is pretty severely exaggerated though to emphasize the form.

  • There also aren’t little bars connecting atoms, and atoms don’t have faces. But here we are.

  • Same reason as iOS.
