  • Curie three times. Her work was so groundbreaking that she got name recognition on the same level as the rest of them as a woman in the late 1800s. Based on my experiences with modern women in stem, I'd expect she worked way harder to get where she did than any of the rest of them and as such I'd expect her insight to hold a lot more value. I'd pick Pierre too if he was also on the list

  • Im glad somebody is fighting trump, but good lord i do not want California to become the blueprint for America. Driving along the PCH from avocado farms in Oxnard to Malibu and seeing the sick fucking filth that is the California wealthy right next to the migrant workers they exploit is in my top 5 "most disturbing things ive ever experienced." That is taking into account that I used to work on strategic bombers and I know in gruesome detail what a 2000 lb bomb does to a human body. Newsom is a bitter poison pill whose voting record shows that he basically agrees with Trump across the board, and his imitation of trump is barely even ironic. He's always imitated trump in terms of policy.

  • I think they might be contrapositives. To me, redneck engineering roughly means "surprisingly good and durable solution made in spite of limited materials and or knowledge" where kludge roughly means "surprisingly shit solution barely good enough to work 1 or 2 times despite having the money/ability to produce a much better solution."

  • Blud sequestering themselves from men is literally the stated goal of that kind of community. So... yeah? If people want to be sequestered that does involve sequestering themselves somewhere. Maybe if you feel like those kind of places are hard to find you should engage in some praxis and spread the word about them rather than crying at me because I feel othered by a "no men allowed" sign planted in a public forum. Wanting a safe space is valid. Trying to force people you dont like out of an open space to create that safe space is not valid.

  • I dont have a ton of respect for people making or enforcing exclusionary spaces on public message boards like that. If they really wanted a separate safe space they'd have something like beehaw with moderated sign-ups and a closed door policy to people who dont go through the verification. I dont care about it enough to argue and I go with a "block and let live" strategy regarding those kind of places, but im also not about to spend time or energy policing myself beyond the aforementioned "on topic, dont be a dick" because a bunch of people intentionally chose the wrong hosting tool for an exclusionary community so they can (in my opinion) performatively other people they dont like in a public space.

  • If I'm making a post I make sure it's relevant to the community I'm posting to, but just commenting on posts that show up in my feed I dont bother most of the time. Most message board rules boil down to "stay roughly on topic and dont be a dick to the other people here" anyway; you probably dont need to know most message board rules if youre adhering to that.

  • In seriousness, a lot of particle physics has to do with smashing shit together really really hard and then studying what comes out. If I am for instance trying to observe a k meson, the way I'd do that is to accelerate a bunch of gold nuclei up to 10 or 12 TeV (i dont remember how fast that is in m/s; some small fraction of the speed of light), smash those gold nuclei into eachother, then look at the spray of particles that comes out. The expected products of a collision like that are heavily dependent on what you started with before any smashing occurs, so particle physicists do tend to care pretty significantly about macro molecules like metal. Mostly because of their decay products, but the metal is important
