    It's very simple, if you're willing to go to such lengths to defend China using spyware, collecting your data, and using it as they please... then why not go use Chinese social media yourself? If you think China is a non threat and all the concerns people have about it are fugazi, then why not go use their platforms? They're bigger, have way more content, way more users, and they're better developed than the Fediverse... again why you here if you don't value things like privacy, freedom, ownership, and control over your data? It sounds to me like you have inconsistent values.

  • Yes, they do. There is no consumer AI model anywhere in the world that's anywhere near as advanced as GPT5. China tried to drum up interest with Deepseek, but it never took hold and the hype quickly died down because it was an inferior product.

    Not to mention that the AI models go beyond just the chatbots. The American AI models used in medicine, science, and research are the golden standard. That's not to say China doesn't have tech of it's own, but the gap is there.

  • OnePlus was never a consumer friendly company. People only liked it because their phones were cheaper than the standard market prices, however, most people understood that this price comes with the caveat that their device is designed, manufactured, and controlled by a Chinese company. Everybody knew that the CCP had their tentacles in these devices, and so it was only a matter of time before things like this start happening.

  • I find it funny that millions of people had no problem with an evil foreign government like the CCP, that's well known for collecting data for military purposes and spending mind boggling amounts on propaganda campaigns, controlling the app, but now draw the line at some Silicon Valley billionaire doing essentially the same thing.

    I never liked the short content format so I never had an interest downloading TikTok, but I knew that I would never, ever download it when I learned that this Chinese app is actually banned in China. They a have a separate clone of this app that's exclusive to China that uses a different algorithm that promotes positive and educational content. The fact that billions of people use this shitty weaponized piece of Chinese spyware is depressing, especially when the Fediverse exists.

  • That's because Vine was designed to be fun and simple. Users only had 7 seconds to make a memorable video, and so people got really creative with it. You can't possibly convey anything of value in such a short duration, so people just used the platform for fun.

  • The people who use Mastodon are very different from the people who use Bluesky. The people who use BlueSky are the former unhinged left wing Twitter users of years past that gave the platform it's notoriety as being the most toxic platform on the internet. When Musk took over, Twitter's title as the worst platform remained the same, except he shifted the source of the toxicity from being left wing to being right wing. This led the unhinged left wing Twitter users to seek a clone that replicated the toxic environment that they once thrived in, and BlueSky just happened to be the one that lucked out.

    The point is that the BlueSky people don't care about anything outside political tribalism. That's what drove them out of Twitter and it's what drove them to BlueSky. That makes them very different from Mastodon users who, for the most part, actually value things like privacy, security, freedom of the internet, ownership, and control. The people who use Mastodon are tech nerds, privacy activist, or niche interest groups that thrive in such a space like the crypto community. I feel like even if we streamlined the process and it easier for people to join, the BlueSky types still wouldn't have an interest in joining.

  • If even Grok shut down completely, it doesn't mean anything. Pandora's box is open and AI generated porn is here to stay. There are soooooooooooooooo many websites that exist just to generate deepfake nudes and AI porn. You take down one, another 100 pop up. It's a futile game of whackamole.

    Even if we passed laws banning this shit, the technology that enables it to be a thing is free, open source, and can very easily be modified to do precisely this. Anybody can run these models locally at any time, and nobody can do a thing about it. Basically what I'm trying to say is that we're cooked.

  • I think this is much more common in women than men.

    Men are generally more visually driven in sexual arousal. Male sexual arousal is more strongly linked to novelty. New visuals = bigger dopamine spike. That makes genre hopping more rewarding, kind of like scrolling endlessly for “the next thing.”

    Women, on the other hand, care more about context, story, emotional tone, and dynamics, so fewer genres can satisfy more deeply. Porn is also usually not treated as the primary masturbation aid by women as it is with men. Because of this, they watch porn less often and explore less genres when they do watch it. They usually just go back to the same genres that worked before.
