For many people, especially politicians, it was always about this. It's a rejection of the unregulated "wild west" internet, built on US ideals of free speech.
Germany used to have a fairly successful Facebook clone. Once it was a bit successful, it was forced to split up. Minors had to get their own separate service, where they could not be contacted by adults. It wasn't a hit. The "American technological hegemony" is the result of deliberate policy choices such as that.
Demanding age verification of websites and services is Europe sticking to its guns; European values.

Yeah. But mind that the bulk price of mediocre cameras is insignificant next to the sales price of AirPods.

I think the idea is that people can walk around and chat with their AI companion, and it sees what they see. No need for any fussing about with hardware. That's exactly Apple's thing. Effortless technology for people who don't want to deal with the mechanics of technology.

They are supporting some projects with free tokens. Their own people are also helping to find and patch bugs. The latter is probably more to help improve the model and harness than PR. I don't think they have to worry about advertising anymore. Mind that there certainly would be a major outcry if something important got hacked with help by their service. They might even have to pay damages. But I wouldn't put it past them that they are being responsible as a matter of principle.

Yes. I hesitated to post this because I understand that many here would prefer not to know. But, at least, people need a chance to learn the facts and make their own decisions. The amount of anti-AI disinformation is crazy.

Likes don’t affect that at all, boosts or shares or retweets or whatever they are called affect that and are sent to the author and your followers

That changes the calculus. With something that is just a private thumbs up, like a DM, the stakes are much lower.

It's not. Performance per watt or per dollar increases exponentially. It's not subtle.

That’s what I mean. I’m interested in seeing actual numbers, like seeing how costs differ in specific model/hardware combinations, with certain assumptions on the price of electricity and maybe interest rates or amortization schedules.

What is it that you want to work out? There are various price comparisons out there.

Yes, people are used to monopolistic social media. Doesn't mean that there shouldn't be an alternative. There simply are a lot of things that you cannot do without an authority that grants or denies access to data. If you want the advantages of openness, you have to accept the downsides.
I don't know how that is an argument for anything. If people are more comfortable voting and not posting, maybe we should make posting anonymous.
Repeating a rejected assertion is not going to convince. You strip the username from data. Give me some reason why it would be easier when the data is short. People want their posts to be seen. That doesn't mean they want their usernames seen.

The cost of hardware has always gone down. If it seems different in the last few years, that's because demand has gone up and people are outbidding each other to get the same scarce resource. But the fundamentals have not changed. Once Production catches up, prices will return to the previous trajectory.
Going down. At the same size, models are more capable. This is both because training data is being incrementally refined, and because better methods are thought up.
Going up. Bigger models are better, but more expensive to run. They also require more data to train. The trend towards bigger models will continue for the foreseeable future. How quickly models can be scaled up is limited by the logistics (data centers and training data)

FYI: Ed Zitron is a PR expert. He has no background in engineering or finance.

He has the skills to make people listen to him and give him money. He does not have the skills to determine if any of his assertion are true or not. If you're wondering if I'm calling him a liar, then I can only say that I can't read minds. If you're not wondering, then you weren't paying attention.

The problem with trad SoMe is that it is monopolistic. That's because these companies "own" the data and gate-keep access. If you want open social media, you must not have a gate-keeper. Which means that you can't have someone who controls access. That's a fundamental trade-off.
So what? Should posts be anonymous as long as they are short?
No. It's always data+owner. It doesn't matter if the data is only a single bit.

Mastodon is built around individual posters. When you interact with a post, you interact with the author. Lemmy is built around "communities" (discussions forums) and individual threads/topics. Having multiple different servers handle the voting for a single thread makes much less sense.

The obvious problem is that the author/their instance has a vested interest in up/down votes.

To me votes are a way to signal to others if they should bother reading something. I'm not quite sure how that works on Mastodon. I don't think likes influence visibility outside the home instance?

The author is interested in getting their message out. Think about someone trying to sell stuff, for example. They would want to manipulate the visibility/apparent popularity of a post. Such a party would also be most interested in the identities of supporters/detractors.

If you wanted to create psychological profiles, you could create bait messages and observe the reactions. That would be much more effort, but if that is a concern, then that probably isn't good enough.

It's not clear why voting should be private when posting is not. Your posts reveal much more about you than your votes. Voting only signals to other people that you believe the content is good/a waste of time. Eventually, the arguments for anonymous posting/voting are the same.

It is a problem that it is obfuscated that votes are public. When people don't know that, then they may be tricked into revealing things they might not otherwise.

I believe there is a place for both anonymous and pseudonymous posting/voting, but not for half measures. Anonymous and pseudonymous posting shouldn't be mixed. That just opens the floodgates for all sorts of manipulative practices.
