  • If you find out a guy who comes to poker night is cheating to win, and gets caught trying to cheat during a game, would you still agree to play with him again?

    I refuse to believe that 50% of Americans would say, enthusiastically, yes.

    And yet, we had evidence of Trump pressuring governors to "find extra votes", and also the fake elector scheme, and also the January 6th coup that he watched unfold on live television and did nothing to prevent, and people think that he didn't cheat in 2024? Am I supposed to believe that people said, yeah that's our guy? Or it is more likely that he just cheated so well this time that he got away with it?

    He should have never been allowed to run again, but useless decorum is what killed any chance at Trump ever seeing justice for his crimes against the American people. No, it would look bad if we banned the known cheater from the poker table, just let him play again and beat him fair and square this time, right?

  • I keep forgetting to comment this, but does anyone else remember RFK jr setting a September deadline for "curing Autism"? Like, I remember it being a big deal at the time because that's not really how science works. Right wingers tried to contrast it with Biden claiming he would find a cure for cancer, but he didn't set himself an arbitrary deadline to make that happen.

    How suspicious is it that he nailed his deadline window for discovering the "cause" and now has a bogus cure in the chamber as well? Nevermind the fact that they don't provide any actual evidence of any of these claims.

  • I used to have "imposter syndrome", where I would always feel like I am just pretending to be a qualified and knowledgeable individual, and that at any moment someone would unmask me as a fraud, even if I wasn't and had no reason to feel that way.

    Then Trump got elected and suddenly I was cured. If that moron can get elected to the most important job in the country, whatever I'm doing is small potatoes. You can be an incompetent fool and still have people fall over themselves to defend you if you have confidence and strut around with an air of legitimacy.

    By the time he was elected a second time, I no longer believed in either humanity or the concept of being "unqualified".

    Let him be an inspiration. Chase your dreams. If the village idiot can successfully become POTUS, you can do whatever you set your mind to.

  • Very true, however, 15k sitting in a bank account will be equally as worthless as a valueless security if the economy completely imploded.

    I've also noticed that the economy is pretty robust in it's ability to weather storms that should theoretically cripple it. It would take an event so catastrophic that all sectors of business are heavily impacted. Barring all-out civil war, I can't see that happening. Even a global pandemic saw certain businesses do better than ever - companies that made PPE, hand sanitizer and toilet paper mostly.

  • Coming from someone who wishes they invested earlier rather than shoving my savings away in a checking account - if you can't think of something off the top of your head that you would need that money for in the next year or two, invest it in an index fund. It's braindead easy, does not require you to manage it, and will steadily grow 6-10% each year which beats any high yield savings account by a fair bit. So you just set it and forget it and then maybe in 10 years you remember you invested 15k in VTI or VOO and now you have around 30k or more depending on how well the market did.

    There will be market booms and busts, and you might end up losing money in the short term, but as long as there is a functioning economy, the line will inevitably go up.

    I prefer index funds over bonds because you can always sell your position if you need a quick infusion of cash.

    Again, this is just if you don't already have designs on how to spend the cash. If your bro gave it to you to enjoy it as you see fit, you shouldn't feel obligated to save it. Do what you think is right for yourself.

  • I've noticed this happening more often than I would have imagined, actually. There are some times where Trump or one of his sycophants will make an off-the-cuff remark that is actually, genuinely, a good and logical thing to do. it doesn't happen that often, but it does happen. The bizarre part is that when that idea fails to manifest media coverage detailing how bad it is, they just... give up on it. It's like the conservative political philosophy has completely morphed into being a contrarian force against liberalism, in spite of whatever their personal beliefs might be. If democrats are ambivalent on an issue, so are they.

  • The video games industry needs to learn to not be afraid of letting games cook for a little longer. Silksong took a long time to come out, but what we eventually got was a good game made by a small team. Imagine if instead of the 500+ team members working on the next annual release of Assassins Creed, they peel off 50 artists, writers and programmers to create a new IP over the course of the next 5-7 years? Kind of like the original decision to do just that which got us... Assassin's Creed for the original Xbox.

    There has got to be a good balance between "Here is EA Sportsball 20XX, that will be $70 please." where you get an underwhelming and uninspired annual release title with minor changes from the previous year, and Duke Nukem Forever or Cyberpunk 2077 that were trapped in decades-long development hell and released a sub-par, buggy product.

    It's not the $70 price tag that's the issue, it's "what am I getting for the extra $10 I am paying for this?". If the answer is a more polished and refined product, I'm all for it - but that doesn't seem to be the case.

  • I so wish I could register with a half decent 3rd party here in California, but they're all complete jokes. California Independents nominated Trump in 2016, ffs. I can't trust any of these idiotic political parties to not nominate HitlerBot 2000, some current or former celebrity, or a meme candidate.

    3rd parties lack a nuanced political platform that differs from their contemporaries, and they also lack qualified and charismatic candidates to bring them out of obscurity.

  • This is the coolest trick since I learned about the "quick 20% tip on your tab" method. Take the total bill, move the decimal point one place over to the left, then multiply it by 2 to get 20% gratuity. I will sometimes round down on the change to make it closer to 18%. Also I only really need to do this when I'm drunk and can't maths.

  • I try not to be judgemental about such things. Everyone has different circumstances in life that might have prevented them from learning those skills. My fiancee, now in her 30's, has never owned a bicycle and was never taught. She had a poor upbringing and so the funds were never there for her to be able to learn.

    But man, I sure do wonder about the people whose parents did have the financial means for bike riding and swim lessons. Either the parents didn't show any interest in teaching their kid how to do it, or the kid was not interested in leaning. Either way, it's not really a good reflection on either the parents or the kid.

    The assassin who targeted Trump in Butler also had his sights on Biden and other prominent Democrats. It's not unreasonable to think that he might have had her best interests at heart considering the extremely tense political climate following those events and how she was elevated to center stage when he dropped out the race.
