  • I think Discord does a lot of things that no one other program can also do. There are certainly better programs out there for voice chat, for text chat, for screen sharing, etc. but none of those programs that do it better can do all the other stuff.

    If Discord dies, you would need like two or three other apps to replace all of the features you've lost.

    For people who only use Discord for voice, it's easy to say "Let's just got back to using TeamSpeak or Ventrillo", but if you also used Discord to stream your games to your friends, you now need to find another alternative for that since TS and Vent don't have that function and likely never will.

    It sucks because I think the Discord app is great for what it does. Yes, it creates information silos when everybody uses it for their support/documentation, but before Discord it was Facebook/Twitter and I didn't use those platforms either. I like that Discord is packed with features and the most basic ones are free to use. Finding an alternative will be tough.

  • Guilded is dead. Their website redirects to a thank-you page of some sort. I remember trying it out ages ago and I thought it was pretty decent competition for Discord and had a lot of the same features, but ultimately it would have been susceptible to the same kind of fuckery that Discord is giving us right now. These private companies only want to extract value out of their users.

    Did I say that? I self-censored not because I believe that the word should be unspeakable, but because I don't want to be banned from Lemmy for typing it out. It's explicitly against the rules of /c/politics.

    To be clear, I don't really care if people use it, as an insult or otherwise - that's their business and not mine. But platforms most certainly do. To add on to that, my preferences are not shared by all. I know it makes some people uncomfortable to read it, which is why I try to avoid it when I can. We've all definitely matured past the people that we were in the 90's. I'm not going to regress just for contextual purposes.

  • I have tried playing nice with these people - truly, I have. I've listened to their side of the issue, I've given them the benefit of the doubt, and I've engaged with them in good faith for years hoping that compassion and empathy along with facts and science have the capacity to change minds, albeit slowly.

    The simple truth is that some people need to be bullied. They need to be ridiculed and made to feel foolish, because otherwise they have no motivation to better themselves.

    We, as a collective, have gone too soft on these folk. We treat all of their worst ideas and base impulses as having the same merit as those of a well researched and educated political policy.

    Because of that, we're stuck arguing the absurd with morons, desperately trying to convince them that the earth is round, those clouds in the sky are just vaporized water, and vaccines won't give you autism or make you gay, instead of approaching reasonable disagreement like "should we levy a 1% sales tax or issue a one-time bond to pay for necessary infrastructure repair?" and other such sleep-inducing matters you used to be able to find on C-SPAN.

  • This is what I was going to say. It's one thing to hold your nose and do your job to protect prominent politicians, but Trump would never be satisfied with just professionalism. He demanded absolute loyalty over all else, which is why in my opinion the attempt in Butler was as close as it was - he clearly surrounded himself with people who were pro-Trump first and USSS agents second. Incompetent fools who didn't even bother to set up a perimeter or secure the site where he was speaking. Their only qualities are their willingness to swear fealty to Trump and nothing else.

  • My dog has worked one over on my parents. She won't eat until she gets a treat from my Dad (the appertif, I like to call it), and then she'll eat her food and go over to my Mom and she won't leave her alone until she gives her more treats for dessert.

    If this routine is disrupted, she makes a big fuss.
