  • My argument applies to the text of the post too. You literally can't assign people (count) the decimals.

  • But you actually can assign a unique person to every number, you just need an infinite number of people. You literally mathematically can't do that for uncountable infinities.

  • By assigning people to it it becomes countable. You can't assign uncountable numbers like that. It's both in the text of the meme and in the illustration

  • You can't count the decimals, op is counting the decimals and insisting that they are more of those counted decimals than in the integers. This inherently doesn't make sense and is improper use of what infinities are and what they can represent.

  • By assigning a person to a decimal value and implying that every decimal has an assigned person the meme is essentially counting all the decimals. This is impossible, the decimals are an uncountable infinity. It's like saying. Would you rather the number of people the trolley hits to be 7 or be dog.

What the meme has done is define the decimals to be a countable infinity bigger than another countable infinity. They're both the same infinity.

  • One person for every decimal isn't possible even with infinite people. That is the point I'm making.

  • No it's doesn't because the bottom rail is a countable infinity, the decimals are an uncountable infinity. Go watch the video it explains it.

  • You've misunderstood "some infinities are bigger than others." Both of these infinities are the same size. You can show this since each person on the bottom track can be assigned a person from the top track at 1 to 1 ratio. An example of infinities that are different sizes are all whole numbers and all decimal numbers. You cannot assign a whole number to every decimal number.

Matt parker does a good video on this. I can't remember the exact title but if you search "is infinite $20 notes worth more than infinite $1 notes" you should find it.

  • Man you need to be more concerned with your jokes being funny than being offensive

  • I think it's hypocritical for people to absolve themselves of responsibilities they believe they are owed from larger organisations such as corporations or governments.

If you think climate change is bad you should put as much effort into reducing your personal impact as you think corporations should. If you think the housing crisis is bad you shouldn't own investment properties. If you think political revolution is the only way to to bring about change you should be actively not following the law and revolting against your government. If you think Israel should be embargoed you should not be paying for any Israeli goods or services. I promise if you look through the list of isreali corporations or corporations that participate in their society, you will have a lot to change.

I feel a lot of people become aware of issues and care passionately about change being brought about but don't consider themselves responsible. If you're not interested in bettering yourself and changing your impact, I think less of you as a person.

  • You can buy them if you want. Also vibrators have been pretty widespread for a couple decades now

  • No

  • Usually the free market place of ideas ensures that the ideas, values and knowledge of all people are refined and weighed against each other. This naturally elevates and expands collective knowledge.

On Lemmy however there are only bad ideas so it works to ensure that everyone is on an equal playing field of truly intellectually deficient opinions. And I'm here for it. Can't have fun on Reddit like you can on Lemmy.

  • I'm replying to you and what you said

  • Are we seriously gonna play the "but what do these words actually mean" card for "illegal" and "immigrant?" Kinda stupid ass takes that give credibility to online age verification. My comment wasn't a serious definition, it was deliberately drawing attention to the absurdity of asking to define a phrase with a total of two words both of which are highly specific, unambiguous and descriptive of the very thing they mean. At the point where phrases like this need to be rigorously explained and defined, we're in a "learning the language for the first time and doesn't actually know what words mean" scenario

  • Why do you oppose illegal immigration

  • Someone who immigrated illegally?
