    Base line Lemmy has a left skew. Hexbear people are the basis for probably a quarter of conservatives talking points.

  • Most of the SAR is voluntareer based here. There are several regional SAR groups all made of ordinary people who help the state in their free time. The $2k is an average not fixed amount. Depending on circumstances it'll be higher or lower.

  • I was going to make my own comment but this hits the nail on the head. Civil discussion. They or you may be wrong but make your point and let them make theirs and may the strongest prevail.

  • In my state SAR is free unless the person was doing something really dumb. Eg. Avalanche victim = free. Vs. Hypothermia evac from winter hiking without a coat = ~$2k total.

  • Politics aside. The court is not going to grant bail to anyone accused of first degree murder who is a flight risk. And given the current narrative seems to be that he shot a man in NYC and was found in another state. I'd say they'd consider him a flight risk.

  • I saw a post about someone who made sliders (mini hamburgers) and everyone they'd served them to so far liked them. I wish we had more posts like that one. The problem with Lemmy is there is not enough active niche communities for peoples interests. This is one thing Reddit does much better due to the scale of the user base.

    It feels like a brief respite every time I stumble on a post like that.

  • You don't have to serialize firearms you make* for your own personal use. You also don't need to register them either*. In fact there's restrictions on the federal government's ability to keep a registry of guns. 18 USC 926(a)(3). From a policy perspective it'd just be creating another possession based crime that's almost impossible to enforce. Because you could just pop a "1" on the side and claim that you sent in your registration paperwork but the government screwed up.

    *True for title 1 firearms (most handguns, shotguns, and rifles) not certain other classes like those that machineguns or silencers fall into.

  • Honestly not sure when. It's kinda an infamous one, it essentially says you can never introduce hearsay as evidence in a federal court because hearsay is unreliable... unless you fall into one of the 23 exceptions. Or you meet one of the two exceptions in FRE 807.

    Tbf a lot make good sense and are just about government written records and making sure you don't need to find some government official who retired 10 years ago.

    A blockchain being essentially a public ledger.

    It's a good concept that will doubtlessly have several if not many practical uses. I think any hatred it gets is just because like every new thing hucksters try and brand it as the cure to all ills to make a buck.

    Are the people voting third party in the US election going to suddenly stop commenting on Nov 6th when their candidate obviously loses?

  • I'll answer for them. Anyone pushing the view points on the matters you desire. A vote for third party is better than not voting at all, as people will just lump you in with people who can't be bothered to vote otherwise.

    That said what matters most is the down ballot. Look up the candidate that most align with your views and vote for them.

  • I see both. Even moderate conservative view point tend to get straw manned as being MAGA. Heck I see left leaning people who just didn't like that Biden was running get bashed for suggesting the Democrats run a different candidate. Now I see the same on anything less the pro Kamala.

    If Harris anonymously posted a self criticism on here I wouldn't be surprised if people called her MAGA. That's not to say everyone here acts that way but a vocal percentage does.

  • Where I'm from Halloween you go around and ask for candy, the historical implication being you'd vandalize the property of or otherwise harass in costume anyone who refused. Which followed Cabbage Night, where you would TP people's houses under the cover of darkness.

  • Great question. In theory/practice you can just shut up from square one. But asserting your rights by doing so in clear unambiguous terms for is advisable. Judges understand someone saying "I wish to invoke my right against self incrimination as protected in the 5th amendment" better than the do pure silence.
