I like city building games and puzzles. I like other things as well, but that's not important right now.

  • Your competitor is like, Adolf Hitler or Elon Musk or something. I think they would probably cringe a lot looking back on their lives

  • I heard of and signed up to AO3 (https://archiveofourown.org/) but it looks predominantly for smut fan fiction so idk if that's useful.

I’m thinking of like something that has a weekly prompt or something & people can read/ comment on your posts?

Look at comms on !411@literature.cafe (https://literature.cafe/) where there's a creative writing comm, and a Writing Prompts comm, and some others.

  • Interesting thought experiment. The thing is, Puritanism is older than Quakerism, I think. Oldest long term English Settlement in the region is Jamestown from 1607, but quakerism is 1657'-52. The Puritans had a head start.

I also get the feeling Catholics and the other protestant groups, who later settled in the USA in huge numbers, would have hated the hypothetical Quaker majority and done violence against them or driven them out.

Fun fact: Quakers were important advocates against slavery in the UK (presumably in the USA too), from its very inception.

  • Yes, Quakers. They sit reflectively with one another instead of listening to services (generally speaking). Some don't consider themselves religious

  • If it makes you feel better, there are so many people like this 😅.

On the flip side, people can also "lose" their social skills - I feel like I have had good social skills since being a kid/teenager, but they got rusty because trauma meant that I shut down and stopped talking to people as much. I was facing so much anxiety around social interactions that I sought a diagnosis for autism as an adult, but the doc made a strong case that it was other factors, and since getting a better understanding of it all I've become more of a social butterfly again.

  • In my opinion: kind of option B)

The situation you describe is one of those moments where it's actually appropriate to finish their sentence - so listen to the other person and find an opportunity to do so, or comment (usually somewhat enthusiastically) "Yes, I'm familiar with that!" Possibly adding a short anecdote of how you became familiar with the topic.

They're still going to want to discuss it regardless, but this way it's a more productive experience because they now understand that you're more up to their level of knowledge. So they can move on to higher ideas about the topic rather than get bogged down in exposition.

It is not rude, because you're showing enthusiasm for a topic they're sharing with you. People prefer this to spending the time telling someone something they already know.

I would argue that waiting for them to finish can be ruder because it might make it seem like you were focusing on something else while they spoke to a brick wall.

  • Dandelions and nettles indicate "rabbits haven't got here yet"

Poppies indicate "the CIA hasn't sent the US Army here yet"

Clover indicates that leprechauns haven't got here yet. Return after Saint Patrick's day to find loose chunks of gold.

Lavender indicates that artisanal soap makers haven't got here yet.

Heather indicates - oh, it's gone. They're here.

  • Fleeing tiktok --> Instagram/Snapchat as first port-of-call. Almost every tiktok user will have one or both of those

Fleeing tiktok, Instagram or Snapchat and seeking a new SM --> Reddit

Fleeing Reddit (or Twitter) ---> fediverse. I'm actually not sure how else anyone would discover the fediverse unless they A) are highly conscious of digital privacy, B) follow a creator who gives it a shout out, or perhaps C) are very into forums (they would probably try Reddit first)

Should we tell people Lemmy exists or is the organic slow growth much better long term?

In my opinion, both :). You telling people that Lemmy exists is organic slow growth unless you do it on a YouTube channel to many many people all at once.

  • It's weird being a zoomer who doesn't use tiktok and hearing that that's pretty much the only reason most people oppose Israel. Kind of sad. I like to think that if tiktok had never existed we'd have made people aware in some other way.

  • Wow the fediverse has a platform for everything. I was surprised to see there's 1 or 2 Instagram alternatives too (e.g pixelfed)

  • No mate. That is to say, your initial stance (a chauvinistic magazine) was correct.

I suppose one explanation for why they don't support smart glasses, other than it being common decency, is that home made porn detracts from traditional porn's market-share.

  • In this projection that means the map is stretched more horizontally than vertically, if i understand correctly

You're right! And yes, north to south is roughly the same distance as east to west. Subconsciously I've always felt like north to south is a quicker journey, but that was just Mercator playing a trick upon me

  • Bit unsightly too

    i actually love them, aesthetically.

i think they're cheaper to replace/repair in earthquake prone regions

ALSO if you're in a snowy remote region, serial killers LOVE to snip these so they can "pick people off" one-by-one. This might seem detrimental to the local economy, by virtue of depleting the workforce, but serial killers are great for local tourism once they're put away.

  • Interesting how much closer kazakhstan (and by extension, china) is to europe when you see it like this. Like if the red outlines were all smooshed back closely together.

How did you know she was speaking other klnguages? Is it possible she just spoke gibberish because you wouldn't be able to tell the difference?

  • Yes, totally. Maybe on the literature cafe instance? Short stories and creative writing is one of my favourite things on the internet
