  • Counter argument: alcohol, weed, tobacco, cocaine, drinking and driving, speeding, and acid were all so incredibly commonplace that people were confused when they were phased out or delegalised.

    Social media is not on the same level as books, radio, tv, movies, video games and music. The sacred sextuple.

    Social media is, however, similar to the afforementioned things, in that partaking in the substance or activity regularly gives you illusions that it benefits much more than it really does, whike ultimately just being bad for you and predisposing you to binging.

    I think people are ao defensive over social media because A) they're addicted and of course B) they're worried kids won't be educated on political issues, which i think is probably the more pressing issue than privacy. Becauae we already don't have privacy on mainstream SM

  • Unironically just don't let them on until 16 (ideally) 15 or 14 if we're a bit liberal with it.

    Kids younger than that should be limited to whatsapp and texting.

    Maybe we sbould even roll out a social media License. It's a pretty damaging thing, but some people push back hard against that because it's like a drug to them. Some adults can't even really be trusted with it.

  • I want people to remember me as smart, creative and hard-working. I hope the fact that i was kinder and more diligent than so many other people I've met counted for something.

    Aspirationally, maybe people will also see just how much trauma I've overcome and be impressed that i made it as far as I did. But largely I don't talk about it.

    Sure, it is. To facilitate a life like this you might want to:

    • get a job that involves working in the wilderness anyway, e.g arborist, hunter, botanist, zoologist, river steward (engineering or environmental science role)
    • get training on how to protect yourself in the wilderness, e.g filtering water, finding food
    • create your own nature project in the meantime time, like a re-wilded allotment, an apiary, or river remediation. This is good practice but also might be useful if you went through with a wilderness retreat

    One of the reasons I chose to study engineering was in the hopes that, if society collapses or I depart into the wilderness, I'd know a thing or two about setting up my own clean running water and structures. A plumber and carpenter would know way more about those things than me, but I still feel like I know the basics now. (Also, potentially I could get a job in river management which means I might become more familiar with wild spots that are good to camp out or live full time at.)

    However I think it's better to try and coexist with whatever crazy events are happening in society. You can get the best of both worlds - set up a get-away spot in the wilderness but spend most of your time working and living in civilisation. The thing is, you have so much more freedom and mobility in society - you can mobilise against any threats rather than just run away from them! You can persuade people to your cause.

    If you want to resist AI without departing from society, then some ideas are:

    • training in something like law or a creative field (yeah, get fucked all you STEMbros and finance fatcats who said art and English was useless
    • Simply not using it - this is a surprisingly powerful step to making you immune to AI takeover. People who use Chatgpt regularly have their lives ruined.
    • Support local libraries, and art galleries.
    • consumerist based things like not buying the latest phone model, or cars (or at least self driving ones).

  • An entire continent is covered with Eucalyptus trees. They suck the moisture out of the entire surrounding area and use allelopathy to ensure that most of what’s beneath them is just bare red dust. No animal is making use of them——they have virtually no herbivore predator. A niche is empty. Then inevitably, natural selection fills that niche by creating an animal which can eat Eucalyptus leaves. Of course, it takes great sacrifice for it to be able to do so——it certainly can’t expend much energy on costly things. Isn’t it a good thing that a niche is being filled?
