  • From a worker standpoint, while you’re researching that thing you can find for yourself, someone of equal skill to you that is leveraging AI has solved 3 of those issues. And someone with more skill has solved 10. And someone with lesser has either crashed the network, or solved that same 1.

    This is complete fantasy. I've personally watched like 10 SEs decide LLMs are the best things since sliced bread and talk up how much more productive they are and without exception they're all to varying degrees just worse at their job. Same for every other role I've observed as well, though I have fewer data points.

  • The thing most people, in the US at least, lack, are the security that they're going to have basic needs met unless they work 40 hours or more a week until they die. This means they barely even get the time to do things that make them happy.

    We could have a society where everyone gets food, shelter, and medical care, and still work less than we do now and actually enjoy life. We don't, because the mega-rich people won't let us and not enough people have awoken to these realities.

    AI hasn't really changed anything.

Additionally, even if the squashed commit message is bad, it will at least correspond to a PR in the forge.

  • Squashing is good because otherwise you have commits that are unreviewed and broken in your main branch which confounds git bisect, which is largely the only time most people even look at commit history

    It's not even really CEOs that make all the bad decisions. Layoffs for instance are almost always in reality a direct decision by the board, and the board members of public companies are usually even worse people (and in many cases just a direct representative of a bigger company so it bubbles to the same worst people at the top) than the CEOs, as hard as that is to believe

  • Even before the energy usage comparison it is still a disaster. If these things were being powered by renewables and being cooled without using massive amounts of potable water, both of which are possible, then we could have that conversation. As it is, they are being built using the worst systems they could ecologically, including in some cases in the US straight up illegal gas turbine generators that they're getting away with because the government is in cahoots

  • The reasonableness of your assertion kind of comes down to environment. Say NPM where people go nuts with dependencies (and is the subject here). If for instance there is a security issue in a package used by the package in question and you must update the package in question to get the package with the security warning updated, then you must update the package in question, and there is every expectation in the NPM ecosystem that semver is followed.

    That said, being rude to the developers is immature and counterproductive, and moving to a different solution if a package repeatedly causes problems would be the sane course of action.
