  • every comm is usa politics

  • We are discussing my own experiences over the last 10 years with people saying uber et. al. are unprofitable and will therefore eventually go broke, the OP looks to be repeating this

If you are unable to understand what we’re talking about and use words you don’t understand maybe spend less time being a snarky fuck and more time thinking about what you type

  • because you said

The jokes about spotify et. al.

What do you think et. al. means?

  • lol are you trying to gaslight me?

that doesn’t even make sense about uber, paying for what that you used to own?

  • People were making the same jokes about Spotify and Uber for 10 years, good to see nobody learned

  • for me i donate to https://protectavolunteer.com/ who send the funds directly to soldiers, weapons to ukraine who have campaigns like https://weaponstoukraine.com/en/kampane/sos

SOS Kyiv – Emergency Fundraiser for Generators and Backup Batteries

and UFL Robin https://www.reddit.com/user/UFL_Robin/ who does weekly raffles like this one that just ended:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/1qjvk1q/about_7_hours_left_for_a_shot_at_three_packages/

they literally post videos and photos showing the goods being received like

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/1qjxgmj/tempest_group_of_3ab_and_fluffy_boy_downie_thank/

this is about as close to the front line i can get without being there

irl i don’t have time to do charity work so before ukraine i would donate to a homeless shelter and climate change charities, I try to buy australian or european where I can, avoid american/chinese, and have solar panels/solar battery/ev and heat pump, i also export a big chunk of battery power every night during 5:30pm to 7:30pm to reduce demand when fossil fuels are being used the most, it takes about a ton per year of co2 off

tldr i don’t have time for charity work as im already pretty busy irl similar to you so i try to make up for it by having my donations go as far as possible and things i spend money on make the biggest impact

  • Then what is the point of what the OP is saying? How is Mastodon any different? If anything it looks like it's worse because ICE just have a basic link to their website and it's done.

  • What's stopping ICE from verifying on Mastodon?

  • Does Mastodon even have the verification feature?

  • Stock price wise the company is clearly worth more because it's selling more and making massive amounts of money and by massive I mean they're printing money right now

The other part is that the 3 major players SK Hynix, Samsung and Micron have basically said they don't want to oversupply the market and when the AI bubble pops have memory prices go through the floor again, so they are treating this as if it's a bubble and in a few years time the demand will subside, so they are not blowing up all their capital to expand as quickly as possible

"This follows reports earlier this month that the price for DRAM sticks of memory for desktop computers had increased by over 170% year on year. Mostly driven by the high demand for building new AI-focused data centers, memory makers aren't planning to increase production either, on the off chance the demand dries up."

    https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/samsung-raises-memory-chip-prices-by-up-to-60-percent-since-september-according-to-reports-ai-data-center-build-out-strangles-supply

I saw Samsung may already be in the process of building a new fab but i cbf looking up further, basically looks like higher memory prices, for longer, with no oversupply glut with cheap prices once the bubble pops like in the past :(

  • This would have been good if things like

Do we? Gestures to world around me - really? Yes children show poorer impulse control than adults. But aren’t we all somewhat helpless in the face of the mighty tech companies?

Had less vague gestures and more links to evidence and studies

aren’t we all somewhat helpless in the face of the mighty tech companies?

To a degree yes, which is why I support the ban and want it extended, I hate how twitter still has every bad take there is and all the bad takes on that platform show up EVERYWHERE, I can't get away from them

  • i don’t know who’s a bigger loser here, the people making shitposts on twitter or the people who write articles on said shitposts

  • i did the google take out and then just a regular drag and drop, everything went fine but all my screenshots had no dates in the metadata by the looks so it put them all on a single date which caused immich to stop loading properly

just once it did I went through and deleted all my old screenshots and now it's all good again :)

  • afaik MariaDB is the open source version of MySQL

  • that's funny I was in the exact same situation as you, ended up making my own self hosted image/video hosting service using supabase for auth and 'bucket' storage on my laptop, coded using mistral ai for the majority and claude to clean up

  • seems like so far things are going well, businesses spend more on ads on google 🙃

Google, for now, is still laughing its way to the bank. The search giant is putting advertisers' ads within or directly above and below AI Overviews themselves. As Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an interview last year, "If you put content and links within AI Overviews, they get higher clickthrough rates than if you put it outside of AI Overviews." Organic links are pushed down.

Even in 2024, market research company SparkToro's study of searchers found "almost 30 percent of all clicks go to platforms Google owns." For every 1,000 Google searches in the United States, 360 clicks go to a non-Google-owned, non-Google-ad-paying property. With the rise of AI Overview, Google's share can only have grown, while everyone else's has shrunk.

I believe maps and youtube were money losers for google for a very long time but the goal was to keep people within the google ecosystem where they can extract money from users in other ways
