I never used /e/ but I used iode (https://iode.tech/) and it worked really well. Main differences:
Graphene doesn't support pattern unlock because they claim PIN is more secure. This is stupid because you can just as easily see what PIN someone typed as the pattern. Since PIN is less convenient most people will use finger print unlock which means you can be easily forced to unlock your phone against your will
iode has support for shortcuts when using 3 button navigation, Graphene doesn't for some reason
iode has really nice tracker blocker which can run next to a VPN, Graphene doesn't
Graphene let's you install Google Services in a separate work profile and separate apps that have access to them from other apps. In iode you will have microG installed system wide
For me that were the biggest differences. When it comes to app support they worked pretty much the same. I'm on Graphene now and it would be too much work to change now but for my next phone I will most likely go with iode.
You're saying they have some sort of app that actively blocks firefox from running on their laptop? I fortunately never worked in a company that did something like this. I would say it's more likely that the web application simply checks user agent and blocks unsupported browsers.
Graphene OS was always limiting their growth potential in silly ways. After google is out they will simply choose the best option available to them. What I'm trying to say is that it's far to early to worry about it as they will still support some phones for up to 7 years. By then we can have true linux phones available, Graphene can support different phones or we will simply switch to different deGoogles ROMs.
GOS users in a time span of 3-7 years (depending on the pixel they have) would unfortunately have to find an alternative
7 years is crazy amount of time for a phone.
Almost double of average lifespan (3x the average according to some sources). You're not going to get more than 7 years from any phone so I'm not sure what alternative are you looking for. Even the 3 years for oldest phones are close to average lifespan.
Also, it's not like getting a Pixel somehow ties you down to Pixel phones forever. Your next phone can be any other Android phone and you can use any other deGoogle Android version on it. Ditching Pixel phones because you will only be able to use them for 7 more years makes 0 sense.
Pixel has some great features and is an interesting deGoogled OS but their approach to security is just silly. It's basically "we will not let anyone compromise on security because it could be bad PR for us". They pretend they care about the brand but then they simply wont let majority of users use their OS. I think normal team would simply make Graphene OS available for other phones and then have some Graphene OS Extended Security version compatible only with select phones. Their purist approach only turns away potential users.
Pixel has 7 years of support so you could get Pixel 10 and use with Graphene OS until 2033 but yes, if you need to switch every year to the latest model than you can skip Pixel.

Yeah, same for me. I'm sure I'm on top of CIA's list of "people to hack" so no security compromises for me.
