Don't think the original LISP is used much anymore, but there's various dialects like Scheme, Racket and Clojure.
Some examples where it's used, off the top of my head:
Lilypond for when you need your sheet music to be turing-complete. Uses Scheme.
Emacs, for configuring the whole editor. (Has an own dialect, Elisp.)
GNU Guix, which uses Scheme for configuring the entire operating system.
Obviously, you can also use them for general software development. A few years ago, I read of some project that used Clojure for a larger backend service, with the author gushing all over the place.Some folks are really passionate about the LISPs, but yeah, not terribly popular in the corporate world...
In my experience, the biggest problem is that maintainable code necessarily requires extending/adapting existing structures rather than just slapping a feature onto the side.
And if we're not just talking boilerplate, then this necessarily requires understanding the existing logic, which problems it solves, and how you can mold it to continue to solve those problems, while also solving the new problem.
For that, you can't just review the code afterwards. You have to do the understanding yourself.And once you have a clear understanding, it's likely that the actual code change is rather trivial. At least more trivial than trying to convey your precise understanding to an LLM/intern/etc..

Yeah, IPv4 addresses use four bytes. Those four bytes are represented as four decimal numbers, separated by dots. And a byte can only represent the decimal values 0–255.

Just to say, though, I feel like 99% of the software we deploy is open-source for that exact reason. Projects generally start out small, where you try to evaluate some concept. You're not gonna spend months to go through the purchase process of some proprietary tool, if you can help it...

A colleague is leaving the job at the end of the month and our vacation booking system said she had 16 vacation days left, so she booked those at the end of the month, her supervisor approved, she handed over all her tasks, returned the hardware and everything, and thought she was done working here.
On her first day off, the supervisor calls her to let her know that she can't actually take that many vacation days. Because she quit in the first quarter of the year, she only gets a quarter of the vacation days for the year, which the vacation booking system did not account for and well, the supervisor had not noticed while approving either.
Like, it's kind of just how the contract and laws and everything works. I don't know, if the supervisor offered to convert it to unpaid leave, but that's kind of the only real thing, they could've done here. But yeah, still just such a dumb situation after all...
Today, I noticed that my glasses case sticks to my work laptop like a magnet.I played around with it for a few seconds, then the thought struck me, that it might be my glasses case that's magnetic, and I might be fucking up the electronics or the HDD or something by holding it close to my laptop. Pulled away real quick then. 😅
I did try with my keys later, and well, turns out that it's my work laptop that's magnetic, so I guess, I wasn't fucking anything up after all...
I think, you could replicate it by creating an invite-only instance that federates with no other instances.
...Which makes this whole concept sound exactly as weird as I assume it is. Like, was there a point to these communities? It just sounds like a smaller audience, with no real reason to post there...
Never had cats, but is that not a playful pose? At least, I believe they do this when they want another cat to play with them.
Of course, there's the trouble that you're not a cat, so can't really wrestle with them like another cat would. But yeah, maybe you can poke at them or next to them, so they can avoid your 'attacks' as a game.
