A geologist and archaeologist by training, a nerd by inclination - books, films, fossils, comics, rocks, games, folklore, and, generally, the rum and uncanny... Let's have it!

  • From the top level of this: An open letter to NLnet to pull funding from development of Loops

    Conflict of interest

This open letter has been authored by contributors who wish to remain anonymous. The authors, as well as some of the undersigned, are friends and acquaintances of hazycora, and as such, we acknowledge any potential conflicts of interest stemming from our relationship.

I don't know either party but from the information made public it looks like dansup has acted like a dick and fallen out with hazycora and the drama has escalated hard.

From what I've observed dansup has been going full tilt to get Loops done because of the issues with TikTok and he is not great at delegating or really dealing with people. However, it would be a shame for such vital projects to have their funding cut but, equally, if I was in charge of those grants I'd be worried about dansup burning out and progress stalling. So it should be a requirement that all this is made open source as a priority, with a short to medium term goal being to have these projects run by a group of people to ensure the future and avoid similar issues going forward.

  • There's a while book on this topic: Of Mice and Men. Probably.

  • I was wondering how things were going there.

  • Cool, I was trying to figure out if there was a way to do that.

  • Like Facebook event and marketplace replacements on the fediverse. Or just a Facebook alternative that isn’t Frendica. Or maybe a commercial fork of Frendica.

    What? Why? How? What?

There's no reason monetisation can't be built into the Fediverse as it is. Ghost is looking like a good replacement for Substack for those that want to monetise their blog/newsletter. Flohmarkt is a Fediverse classified ads service. I don't think it'll be long before we see an Fediverse Patreon or eBay, for example, I just suspect the early Fediverse adopters have been so anti-capitalist that they have either rejected such things or overlooked them entirely. However, it'll be key for getting content creators to move over to the Fediverse as they'll want to keep their income stream.

In the meantime, more attention on the Fediverse should mean grant money flows in and crowd funding takes off.

  • My first Loops video! And it's just a download from TikTok. 😕

  • It's compatible with the Mastodon API, so some of the apps work for it. I was talking to the developer of an iOS Mastodon the other day and they are off checking compatibility at the moment.

edit: I also started a thread on people's experience with apps on !friendica@lemmy.ca.

  • That's her description of her ideal social network, "found" is probably a bit misleading here where "I came up with the features I'd like to see in my ideal social network".

do we have to make it ?

Kinda. However, from her description what is really needed is a big push to improve the UX/UI of Friendica (probably work on not overwhelming the new user with so many options too) and get it a lot more stable (although in her Friendica piece, she suggests it might be the instance she was on). Better that than reinvent the wheel.

The good thing is that it feels like Friendica's time has come - Meta is enshittifying, Bluesky is popular but people are wary of where it is going and Xitter is a dumpster fire. With more people using it, there will be more focus on improving it and it could be ready to blow up like Pixelfed just has.

  • It's compatible with the Mastodon API, so you can use those apps.

  • That's what I was thinking. I know one I complaint about Friendica is the interface is a bit clunky, so that might help address the issue.

  • Thanks for that. As a front end I'm not sure it meets my criteria but it is interesting. The look wasn't necessarily a big deal but I wonder if you could bolt that onto Friendica...

  • Is it? I know it’s been moved to Wordpress, but I haven’t heard about this.

Good point. Last updates were they were still working on it in December 2023 but the move to WP seems to have either derailed the efforts or forced it to switch tracks.

Ghost can apparently be used to manage multiple blogs under different subdomains. Might be worth looking into when their ActivityPub supports goes out of early access.

I'm seeing Ghost as a Substack killer, as that is a toxic swamp we need sensible folk off. Nearly everyone who had a newsletter migrated there. Only one listened to their fans and backed straight out again.

  • Well done!
