  • Yes, but law enforcement can absolutely do something about this. Whether it makes it through court is a different question. Clear cases like that go either way all the time.

  • People who have access to hrt usually also have access to a fridge

  • I literally have that book at home because of how much I agree with this. A friend highly recommended it and borrowed it to me when I was ~15. I never gave it back purely to avoid having to tell them how eye roll inducingly fake deep I found it. To be fair though, I don't remember much of it either.

  • Sometimes, a piece of fiction does not want you to understand every part of the fictional world from the get go. It's part of the art. For Dune in particular, it's a hard vs. soft world building distinction. Some fiction, harry potter comes to mind, builds up the world slowly and eases you into it, explaining every little thing that makes it different from our own. Some just dumps you into it and lets you experience it as an outsider slowly gaining understanding.

From what I gather, most people nowadays are much more used to the first method, to the point of expecting it and thinking they're missing something when the second method is used. I think stuff like that, including Dune, would be more enjoyable to many if they realised they aren't, in fact, missing anything and that's how the experience of consuming that piece of media was intended to be like.

  • To my understanding, that is only true for civil offenses, not criminal ones. Rape is a criminal offense pretty much everywhere, so cooperation of the victim isn't necessary to prosecute, especially with a confession on a silver platter like that.

  • Understanding something eventually isn't the same as understanding it immediately. The latter is necessary for effective communication. I don't have the brain power or neurotype to decipher a text like I would if it were latin.

I'm not saying that you should shut up if you genuinely can't help it. That's ok. I'll figure it out. We can both communicate with each other to the best of our abilities and I won't mind at all.

But if you can, you should try to be considerate. If you think you spending slightly less time on it is worth me having to spend much more time on understanding it, I find that to be a dick move and I won't give you the time of day forever.

  • I'm sometimes slightly radioactive for medical reasons. Most people will be fine with a certain dosis, but little kids and pregnant people (well, their foetus) won't. So they tell you to stay away from people because you don't know who's pregnant. Maybe that contributes.

  • Georgia is also a country. Gets confusing because some Americans will tell your their state when asked where they're from, even when overseas. I've complimented someone who'd said they're from Georgia on their English before.

(On a side note, can you imagine travelling to the US, being asked where you're from, then going 'oh I'm from alto adige originally')

  • I'm a theoretical physics grad student and a night school maths teacher, I have never heard this distinction. People in academia around me call them round and square brackets.

  • Especially since no seat on the plane will be as roomy as the one in the waiting area.

  • You can pronounce any word any way you like, full stop. But pronouncing them the way most people do just makes for more effective communication.

  • Put bluntly, those who live off labour aren't the enemy. Those who live off property (aka others' labour) are.

  • Please reread my common. I said in my region, western austria, we use the formal you less than the rest of the German speaking world does.

  • Do people actually say that irl?
