  • With unofficial parts you can get anything, from very good parts to outright dangerous ones (especially batteries).

    The problem with IPhone is their association system (which is illegal in the EU BTW). Understandable with those dangerous part on the market, but far too overcharging. They could just warn you during boot or something like that.

    As for the software wall, it is where Fairphones shines. Even when the official support ends, the custom ROMs keeps updating for a while. IPhones are great on that aspect too, Samsungs are OK, but can't say for other brands.

  • The choice of only supporting Pixels comes from GrapheneOS's side, not Fairphone. Fairphone got some great ROMs support, and even have an official partnership with one of them (e/OS).

  • First party spare parts or third party sketchy spare parts?

    Spare part availability comes partly from the popularity of a phone, and iPhones were pretty popular.Fairphone is just starting to get some steam, so third party spare part may start appearing in the future. same for used parts.

    Fairphones got a lot better lately. I got both the 4, 5, and now gen 6, and the latest one feels like a good phone, unless the FP4 which is a brick in comparison. Still lacks several Flagship feature (wireless charging, amongs other), but as a mid-range phone it is quite good.

    And the repeatability is great. I repaired my FP4 once (usb-c port), and it was easy as heck.

  • My Z2 had à drive failure recently, with 4To drives. Took me almost 3 days to re-silver the array 😅. fortunately had a hot spare setup, so it started as soon as it failed, but now a second drive is showing signs of failing soon, so I had to pay the AI tax (168€) to get one asap (arriving Monday), as well as a second one, cheaper (around 120€), but which won't arrive until the end of April.

  • A model being local doesn't make it magically better than cloud based ones. Especially since your local hardware may not be as optimized as professional hardware.

    And I say that as a local AI user.

    The way to make it less harmful mainly comes from external factors :

    • The origin of the electricity (renewable)
    • Shift consumption to a time of low demand (or use a residential battery)
    • Use specialized hardware for specific tasks (use less energy per token)

    Edit:

    I'd add to that that you can reuse the heat generated to heat your apartment. But it only works during winter, as during summer any heat generated will make your AC (if you have one) work harder.

  • I do know that situation very well since I'm one of those.

    Scoliosis (so constant back pain), and a suspected immunity problem (need more pyl.. blood works to be pinpointed) that make me basically sick most of the year (as an example, I'm already at my sixth flu since last September... Fun times 😅).

  • While true in some backwater countries (like the US), that also illustrate the problems with metal health: you mostly cannot measure it.

    A broken bone can be easily seen, a cancer too (in most cases). But how can we measure that your brain fucks up at a fundamental level? Sure we can see some anomalies (hormonal unbalances, parts that are less active than usual, but other thant that...).

    So the standard response in many case is that it is your problem to take care, often with tons of unwelcome "help" ("can you try to be happy", "try X I saw on tiktok", or similar "advice")... If you are lucky.I saw a friend loose about all her "friend" once she became depressed. She's almost homeless these day, living with her family in a motel she barely can afford despite working full time. I help her the best I can (paid for groceries, phone bill, some of the motel nights when she couldn't), but because of everyone turning on her she blame herself for not being good enough. Which in turn make her depression worse.

    Capitalism made empathy a sin. Anyone not helping paythe shareholder their next yatch is seen as a deadweight only deserving to be left to rot.

  • No, quite the opposite. If sexual pleasure is the only thing going great in a couple, and that the joy of being with each other isn't enough for someone to put a condom, one should probably reconsider if said relationship is still a loving one.

    I'd prefer an asexual relationship with someone I deeply love to a very gratifying sex life.

  • I not saying that sex shouldn't be enjoyable, but that f a condom is enough to ruin sex for a guy... Kinda show how much love there is in such relationship. Having a little barrier shouldn't ever bother someone if there is truly love in that relationship.

  • I seriously can't understand those who don't use condoms by default. No contraceptive is 100% foolproof, so using a backup is always a good thing.

    And seriously, if the friction is the only thing that make you enjoy sex, and not with whom you have sex with, you seriously should reconsider your relationship.

    Édit : to clarify, I'm not saying that sexual gratification is a bad thing, just that it shouldn't be the only mean of gratification.Doing it with someone one love is as gratifying as doing if for pure sexual pleasure, if not more, so if having a condom (which some might find uncomfortable) is enough to ruin sex for a guy... Maybe that relationship has more to do with pleasure than genuine love.

  • I never got an issue with copilot, at least in Visual Studio (only one I use).

    Make repetitive tasks like unit test a breeze. And very useful for debugging issues with tools like Entity Framework.

    I switched to full Linux on my personal hardware though. I only use Windows for work.

  • LED do not have a 100% efficiency, and do produce waste heat. A lot less than an incandescence one, sure, but enough for that answer to be valid.Well, maybe you'd better wait 10min instead of one, to make sure the led lightbulb heats enough, but still...
