  • I think they didn't round up the insurrectionists because the executive branch was supportive of the insurrection. Once Congress and others put pressure on the executive branch, they started slowly working on getting them. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a closed-doors negotiated deal. Trump goes free at the impeachment, but the insurrectionists have to be prosecuted and not pardoned.

    If the executive branch wasn't supportive of the insurrection, the whole thing would have lasted less than a minute and been a pile of dead bodies. There's no way a ragtag group of populist dipshits would have been able to compromise the US Capitol otherwise.

  • But the thing is that here in Europe, we are more relaxed than USians because we have government mandated vacation days. It's even better when I get sick at the same time because I can catch a free ambulance ride to the hospital near the beach since there is no "out of network" medical care (whatever that means) here. I can then take mass transit from the hospital to the beach and make university-educated friends with everyone because tuition here is free. Because I didn't die in a mass shooting when leaving the beach, I can order a reasonably-sized meal that doesn't cause instant cardiovascular disease and not leave a tip because our servers are paid a living wage. I can't imagine the horror of living in such an underdeveloped country as USA. I am so glad I am in the EU.

  • I get this part, and I agree with a lot of critique. What I'm noticing is that it seems that I'm seeing more hate than valid objective critique. It seems to me that a lot of the anti-US comments are merely to criticize the US out of hate than to criticize a behavior.

    Imagine it were people instead of countries. This is like being at a party with friends and Marcel is not present. Marlon shares that he likes coffee without creamer. Martiza says she does too. Misty then says, "Did you know that Marcel uses raw milk instead of creamer in his coffee? What a piece of shit. It wouldn't surprise me though. Everything he does is terrible. Remember, he cheated on Mariah in 2006. He's probably cheating on Merced right now." That's completely unnecessary and irrelevant.

    That's what it feels like to me. It's not just critique. It's hate in discussions that are irrelevant to the US. That's been my observation at least, but I'm bringing it up to see if maybe I'm a bit too suspicious or paranoid.

  • Yes, thank you! This is what I was getting at. The critique isn't objective stuff. It seems deep-rooted and personal. It's not about being upset with an action or policy. It's hate.

  • Wasn't one of the first groups that Hitler went after when he gained power were the communists? I'm pretty sure I remember that communists were sent to concentration camps along with Jews, disabled people, and LGBT.

  • I have been using Linux 100% for the past several years without any use of Win. The last time I used Win, it was Win 7 on a work computer. All I know about Win since is from what I see on Lemmy and the very few short instances when I might look at a friend's computer. What I remember not liking about it was a lack of control in comparison to Linux and that it would get slower and slower with updates. Is the latest Win really as bad as Lemmy makes it out to be? Are there ads in the OS? Does it truly spy on you without your knowledge?

  • I thought Win 2000 was an improvement. Didn't Win 3.1 literally run on top of DOS? Like, DOS was the actual operating system and Win 3.1 was merely the graphical user interface/desktop environment, so it consumed a bunch more hardware resources? I think I remember having to run many programs out of DOS so that they would run more smoothly than if I used Win 3.1. In that sense, Win 3.1 was really Ski Free, Space Cadet Pinball, Solitaire, Minesweeper, and a nice file manager.

    I also liked the improvements of Win Vista, but my laptop couldn't seem to keep up with the requirements needed for things to run smoothly. Win 7 seemed like a smoother Win Vista, so that was nice. However, I felt let down that there were no major noticeable improvements other than performance, which could also have been attributed to improvements in hardware. Around then, I started experimenting with Linux out of sheer curiosity and slowly switched to Linux 100%. In the past several years, I know about Win only from what I hear on Lemmy, so ofc I think it's terrible, but I wouldn't know from personal experience and judgment. I'm happy af with Linux anyway.

  • For me, what works is an ADHD medication along with not trying to fall asleep. Trying to fall asleep causes me something in the area of anxiety and guilt, so I end up frustrating myself awake. If I focus on a mindless task like scrolling through Lemmy or reading a book, I get engaged in that and end up accidentally falling asleep. The funny thing is that I have to keep doing my mindless task until I fall asleep, so many times, I wake up looking like I passed out in the middle of something with my glasses still on and my phone laying around. I'm actually curiously impressed that my glasses or phone haven't broken yet.

  • I think it's interesting that some countries have entirely different names depending on the language. Here is one for example:

    • English - Germany
    • Spanish - Alemania
    • Finnish - Saksa
    • Polish - Niemcy
    • German - Deutschland

    There are many others, but they are more so variations of the same name, so I didn't include them. The ones I listed are completely different.

    I heard that the different names originated from the names of the Germanic tribes that interacted most with the respective peoples and resulting language. For example, what would be English-speakers would interact mostly with Germanic tribes, whereas would be Spanish-speakers would interactact mostly with Alemanni tribes. However, Perplexity says that the English name comes from the Roman name for the area, while the Spanish name comes from the name of the tribe. If only Crunk the Historian could investigate this and find an ultimate answer.

  • Consider that the artist probably, at the direction of the subject, made some alterations (aka photoshopped) to the painting in order for the portrait to come out how they wanted to appear. It's possible that the subject looked even worse.

    This drove the point home for me. If a Spanish-speaker says "London", it just sounds completely wrong. For those wondering, it's pronounced "Londres" in Spanish.
