  • I can't really speak to the specific culture of these companies but it's often a good product development choice to require employees to interact with, use, or drink whatever your product is.

    Its called "dogfooding". The idea is that it gets problems with the products fixed because the people making the product have a vested interest in improving what they use everyday.

    Can't speak to whether that's why it's happening in these cases though, or what the culture around it is like (ie if it's cultlike). I just saw an opportunity to share something I find interesting and wanted to take it 🤷‍♂️

  • My advice is to learn a lot as much as you can about polyamory, and how to go about it in a healthy succesful way. Until you're equiped to understand how different the relationship dynamics can be it will be hard to give useful advice or support, or know when things are not in a good place.

    Polyamory can be a perfectly reasonable and healthy, if untraditional way of doing relationships, but it can also very easily be unhealthy, especially if the relationship is polyamorous for the wrong reason.

    Ultimately what would be most important to me is that my kid is healthy and emotionally safe, and until you know enough to evaluate those things, it will be very hard to know whether your kid is in a good spot and navigating a style of relationship you're unfamiliar with, or being taken advantage of while navigating something that is also likely very new for them, or somewhere in between as everyone involved navigates uncharted territories as young adults, making mistakes along the way (which to be fair, is developmentally normal.)

    I very much agree with the other comment about twice the risk. I had a very painful experience with attempting to be poly when it was a poor fit for me and my then-partner, but I have friends who are poly who are profoundly happy to have found the type of relationship that is fulfilling and feels right for them 🤷‍♂️. Its not for everyone, and there are definitely ways of going about it that are likely to end in heartache, but for many people it's a revelation that there are no rules for love, and that they're free to assemble whatever type of relationship they feel is right for them.

    I wish you the best friend, parenting a child who is neavigating things you are fundamentally unprepared to help with because they're alien to you is more than a little bit scary. The best you can do is learn a lot, try to understand where they are, and try to support them in building a healthy life with healthy relationships, even if it doesn't make a ton of sense to you.

  • Once again, one of the very rare few areas where ai isn't a completely shitty solution: tasks that are worthwhile and important, but that require labor no one is willing to pay for.

    Others include translation, transcription, and image descriptions. Things people won't put resources into but that should happen anyway

    The only problem is that these have nothing to do with why massive companies are investing in this tech. If AI didn't enable the equivalent of money laundering for intellectual labor, the billionaires wouldn't give a shit

    If I understand corectly, he was appointed Chancellor by the Paul Von Hindenberg who won the 1932 election that Hitler had also run in, and rose to power as the successor to von Hindenburg after Hindenburg died in 1934

    I don't follow why it would be necessary, would you mind expanding on why its needed for decentralized interaction to function the way users would expect?

    (Also I recognize that might be a huge can of worms, if you do mind thats perfectly understandable. You seem more knowledgable than myself and its an issue I'm very curious about, so it seemed worth asking :)

  • The problem is partially that bluesky isn't really the Fediverse. It doesn't use the standard, and isn't truly interoperable. Accounts can be bridged, but that's a hacky workaround, not actual intercompatibility.

    And threads is run by a company whose human rights violations would take a week just to read out loud.

    The idea that the specific platform doesn't matter isn't a blanket statement, it's a description of being interoperable, nothing more. Bluesky isn't truly interoperable, and threads is run by Meta who facilitated ethnic cleansing, mass rape, and the burning of whole villages in Myanmar despite countless explicit warnings that these things would happen if they didn't take safety measures (not to mention all the other garbage Meta has done or enabled)

  • Edit: I was mistaken that Hitler was elected, thank you to Sem who corrected me below. Hitler ran for office but lost, and was appointed to chancellor by the winner Paul von Hindenburg. When von Hindenberg died a year after Hitler was appointed to chancellor, Hitler succeeded him and abolished the office of president and declared himself Furher und Reichskanzler

    I think it's pretty important that people are willing to grapple with the fact that people will gladly buy into hatred and fascism when a charismatic populist sells it to them as the ails of their people.

    Hitler was elected*. If we want to avoid the mistakes of the past, we have to be willing to confront the reality of how they happened in the first place. Hitler spoke to real fears and anxieties people had, and promised things they truly wanted, like a great nation they could take national pride in once again.

  • Is it spam, or is it literally just people using the fediverse as intended, coincidentally in a language you don't speak? Folks who speak a language other than english aren't less welcome in the fediverse.

    If it's an issue because it's drowning out all the stuff you can read and engage with, I think you can set a Mastodon account so you only see posts in a certain language. Other platforms may have similar settings
