  • In my experience it's been less hive-mindy than reddit was, but to be completely honest I think you kinda get out what you put in

    If you approach things combatively, you'll get combativeness. If you approach things with curiosity, I find you get openness and a willingness to engage with folks sincerly.

    Not sure why you'd wish the death of a platform people are enjoying and that serves as a small escape from the broader corporate web, just because you personally didn't like it.

    I rather like it here, I'd be really sad to see this space cease to exist. It sounds like you'd be better served by going somewhere you like more instead of staying here and just spouting bitterness :(

  • Well they don't even have to decide they wanna eat a shit sandwich- they just have to not be motivated enough to go to the polls and say "I'd like the snot sandwich instead of the shit sandwich, please". Which is what seems to have happened this election as best I'm aware

    A lot of democratic voters weren't motivated, and didn't show up. And I agree with the statement made by the person quoted in the post, a huge part of that feels like it's the democratic party's complete unwillingness to criticize moneyed interests and figure out how to actually appeal to their constituency, and so they're loosing people. And now we're all stuck with that shit sandwich.

  • I feel like the point of metaphors is to explain something new with an idea that's already familiar and understood

    If you have to explain the actual content AND the metaphorical comparison you're using to explain it, you've just kinda added a second thing to explain for very little communicative benefit

    I like the aesthetic and sentiment of characterizating tech in this way, but I don't think it's particularly helpful

  • Same. NC is having similar issues with the legislature stripping some amount of power from the Democratic Governor who won, and the Republican judge who lost is challenging the Democrat winner by trying to argue in court that certain votes should be thrown out.

    American democracy wasn't exactly super functional, but this is genuinely fucked.

  • Yes, and my impression is that there are also a ton of people who very much don't want to be indexed or findable through inorganic means

    I don't disagree about implementing it and letting instances decide, but they've opted for a different compromise of letting people opt in. Having opt in vs opt out be an instance option would be nice, but open source projects aren't always gonna align 1000% with the priorities that you have personally, unless it's personally your project

  • That's a strange take... But even if that logic follows, it's pretty disingenuous to suggest that's what ALL users want, and Eugene is the sole opposition. You and I may want global search, but lots of Mastodon users actively loathe the idea.

    Personally I think it'd be a better platform for it, but I get why there are folks who don't like the idea. I also wish they'd implement quoting people, but again, I understand why some folks don't like that idea. Downvotes don't really make sense on microblogging to me.
