  • That’s easy, its all over this thread, if you don’t recognize it here, you’re not recognizing it elsewhere.

    But that's appropriate in this thread, since it's specifically about a person on lemmy.world complaining about lemmy.ml. The scenario I was describing was of someone chiming in about the "tankies" in a thread completely unrelated to Lemmy instances or politics, like gardening or movies. I feel like I see this all the freaking time, but I suppose I could be wrong. It's always a possibility.

  • I’m assuming you don’t immediately try to turn any criticism against an instance whose politics you agree with, back on the mainstream instance.

    I think that many people reflexively speak out against perceived unfairness. Why should they stay silent when they see people from a problematic mainstream instance constantly complaining about other instances that they see nothing wrong with, the vast majority of the time without evidence, I might add? I mean, it adds up to endless whining, even in completely unrelated threads. I often see it go like this:

    Person 1: "Hey, did you hear about this new scientific discovery? Pretty interesting, huh?"

    Person 2 (very often from .world or piefed.social): "Well, just stay away from the DaMn tAnKiEs! They're horrible!"

    Person 1 (or Person 3): "Huh? I didn't say anything about any tankies. Besides, .world or piefed has plenty of idiots too."

    I've rarely ever seen anyone grumble about .world in a completely unrelated thread without cause (i.e., in response to a .world person saying something stupid), but I see that all the time against mostly the socialist/communist instances with some spillover to the anarchist instances. After a while, people start to react automatically to any complaints about other instances.

    Typically, in website accessibility lawsuits, a visually impaired Plaintiff will allege that a company’s website is inaccessible and incompatible with screen-reading software such that the individual is denied full and equal access to the company’s website in violation of the ADA and the Unruh Act. In these cases, a Plaintiff will seek statutory damages, injunctive relief, and attorney’s fees both individually and on behalf of a class of persons similarly situated. Plaintiffs have been testing this theory of ADA liability in courts across the country for years, with New York, Florida and California being the most active.

  • Thanks, I fully agree that AI can be controlled in the ways you mentioned. I think most of the discussion around AI not being fully controllable is in the context of if the AI is running as it currently is.

    Thanks for the additional info too. I knew nothing about the guy in the link. It was just the first link I found on a quick search about AI not being controllable. I had heard it before, but didn't remember where, or the exact details.

  • I have heard in the past that it's not possible to fully control AI. Like literally, the people developing and running the AI cannot fully control its behavior. I did a quick search to see if I could find more info and found this link on the first page of results: https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1032090

    I think that we're going to continue seeing unwanted behavior from AI.

  • I’ve also got some value out of !linux@lemmy.world and !privacy@programming.dev for one of those reasons: the ambient expertise. It’s not really breaking news: Linux and FOSS and privacy are really the only subjects where the fediverse can go toe-to-toe with the corporates in terms of expertise. IMO that’s already an achievement that should not be squandered!

    Why not !linux@lemmy.ml and !privacy@lemmy.ml which are more popular than the ones you linked?

  • True, but DSA is a large, national organization that's been around for decades, so that implies both institutional inertia and factionalism. It may be a group of both social democrats who don't feel welcomed in the democrat party and actual socialists who may not see any other viable alternative available to them.

  • I gave Qobuz a really good try but in the end gave up because of too many issues with their (iOS) app. Went to Apple Music instead. At least they're not as bad as Spotify, who I had been using before.
