  • They did use letters, but they started with Gen X, because X was a cool letter in the 80s. Gen Y was changed to millennials because that was the time period they grew up in. Then Gen Z, which is the end of the alphabet, so they restarted, but with the Greek alphabet for gen alpha.

  • Only thing I can think of is the black paint would absorb more solar radiation and make it hotter. But the sun isn't out at night which is when many people make that crossing, so I'm not sure they've really thought it through.

  • No, even regular savings accounts have ~4% interest, so it makes sense for anyone who got a mortgage more than 2-3 years ago when the rates went up. Any extra money shouldn't be going to pay down old debt faster, it should be in savings or other high yield accounts.
