  • Users see the word "Tesla" and hit the down arrow without considering context or data. Tesla is a terrible company, and Musk is an egotistical, racist manbaby; those aren't the only reasons why I won't buy a Tesla, but they are a big part. The truth is that every big automobile manufacturer is bad when it comes to infotainment user experience and data privacy.

    I won't buy a Tesla, and most people I know won't either. But when it comes to the US auto market, Tesla is consistently rated as one of the best user infotainment experiences, specifically because of the things you mentioned. I know someone who bought the 2026 Nissan Leaf, and they love it. I've ridden in it a lot and I think it's a great car... except for the user experience. Every time the car is turned on a pop up covers most of the console advertising satellite radio subscriptions. There's no way to disable it. Nissan is widely known to be the worst when it comes to user privacy, too.

    Slate has my attention and I want them to disrupt the market. I'm considering buying one for my next vehicle, with the range being the only thing that hasn't locked in my decision yet. I take several long (500+ miles) trips each year, and I would prefer to avoid having to use Tesla superchargers as there aren't any other fast DC chargers along the route.

  • I have the same problem, and often wake up unexpectedly in the middle of the night. Sometimes I can fall back asleep quickly, sometimes I am up for a couple hours, occasionally I won't get back to sleep at all. Whenever it happens it ruins my energy and mood the following day. It started to impact my energy level to where I couldn't exercise the way I used to. I'd become fatigued so easily that I could barely make it through my routine. Sometimes I wake up with my joints and muscles feeling so sore that I could swear I was beaten with a stick while sleeping. I started gaining a lot of weight despite no changes to my diet. My mood and brain fog were the worse they've ever been. I had maybe one "good" day every month or so.

    A coworker and I were sharing our gripes about getting older, and I mentioned my sleep problems and the impact to my quality of life. They had gone through the same thing years ago, and ended up being diagnosed with severe sleep apnea; they recommended I get tested for sleep apnea, too. I talked to my doctor and scheduled a sleep study; turns out I also have severe sleep apnea.

    If you have any of the sleep problems like me, then I recommend you talk to your doctor about it. Here's a few things to keep in mind:

    • Insist on an in-lab study. Your sleep specialist may try to have you do an at-home test, but those are inaccurate and unreliable. An in-lab study will provide better data.
    • When you receive your results, make sure they're evaluated using the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines, not the insurance industry guidelines. My first sleep specialist diagnosed me with mild sleep apnea and said I didn't qualify for treatment. Poor sleep was affecting every aspect of my health and daily life, so I sought a second opinion from an independent sleep specialist who reviewed the same test results and concluded that I had severe sleep apnea; they said insurance industry guidelines underestimate the severity of most apnea patients. Getting that second opinion made a significant difference in receiving the treatment I needed.
    • If you do end up needing a CPAP, research which masks work best for the position and how often you turn over in your sleep.

  • I would wager that this is going to become a test case that is intended to appeal it's way to the SCotUS. The SCotUS has already ruled that many constitutional protections are waived at the border, so it wouldn't be surprising if that is the intended outcome.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about Tiger; pets can sometimes be their own worst enemy, but I'm glad to hear that even through that, Tiger pulled through and lived a happy life. It makes me more hopeful for the little one.One of my current cats is named Mochi, and much like his namesake he is soft, fluffy, and can be sometimes be a big dumb pile of goo. More than once I've had to chase him around the house to pull something dangerous out of his mouth, and despite catproofing the house as much as possible I'm afraid that one day he'll put something dangerous in his mouth and I won't be there to stop him. Thankfully, he's calmed down as he's gotten older.

  • Thank you for your kind words and positive vibes. FL is a terrible disease, and I'm sorry for what it put you and your kitten though. I hope a cure is found soon. An old coworker of mine adopted an FL+ kitten, but didn't know he had it until the test results from the first vet visit. His condition deteriorated quickly, and they only had a few months together.

  • Feral cats can be dangerous and belligerent under normal circumstances, I imagine that the stress and fear of being in a warzone just makes that worse, both for the cats and your friend! He is equally brave and kind to be doing what he does under those conditions, and I hope that he and the rest of Ukraine find the peace and the justice they deserve on the other end of it all.

  • These days I also avoid engaging. Not just because I realized that arguing on the internet is a waste of time, but I grew tired of having the same arguments over and over. More people today believe the world is flat than people did back in the middle ages. I honestly believed when I was younger that the internet was going to put the sum of humanity's knowledge at everyone's fingertips, making the world overall a smarter, more enlightened place. Instead, the internet is broadly just a bigger soapbox for the brash and self-righteous.

    These days, you could spend 30+ minutes writing a thoughtful reply, deliberately avoiding an argumentative tone, only to be accused of using or being an AI.

    Realistic case? The change in nuclear binding energies renders protons unstable, making many elements unstable or radioactive. All matter suddenly becomes much heavier, changing gravity and internal pressure, which in turn disrupts stellar and planetary structures. Fusion reactions depend on precise mass differences between particles, which may alter how stars generate energy, or completely prevent them from forming altogether. Additionally, since proton mass is tied to the strong nuclear force, it will fundamentally alter physics, and it's likely that protons will decay into neutrons, preventing atoms from existing at all.

    The first wish would affect how fluids act under pressure, including how our blood would move throughout our bodies. Depending on the exact effects, the wisher may not even get the chance to make the second wish because their blood would either stop moving, or they would drop to ground as every capillary in their body ruptures causing an immediate loss of blood pressure, quickly followed by loss of consciousness and then death.

    IF they live long enough to make the second wish, then they probably wouldn't live long enough to make the third.

  • Newer EVs use NACS, which opens up a huge number of fast DC chargers all across the interstate system. Unfortunately those chargers are almost all Tesla superchargers, and we all wish there was a less musky alternative out there.

    I've taken a road trip in the new NIssan Leaf, which has NACS. It wasn't bad; we had to stop for ~30 minutes every ~300 miles, which lines up with just about how often my aging body needs to go pee these days...

  • Right on. James Talarico is the perfect example of what you're talking about. His image is so sanitized and insipid specifically to appeal to the milquetoast voter.

    Controversies like this one only have staying power not because most reasonable people actually think it's a problem, but because opposing campaigns and political parties astroturf social media and "strategically amplify" the story on mainstream news sources to make it seem that way.
