Independent thinker valuing discussions grounded in reason, not emotions.

Open to reconsider my views in light of good-faith counter-arguments but also willing to defend what's right, even when it's unpopular. My goal is to engage in dialogue that seeks truth rather than scoring points.

  • LLM's are not the only type of AI out there. ChatGPT appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Whose to say the next AI system wont do that as well?

  • One of my previous customers was a mentally ill and delusional elderly lady. She called me about a non-existent plumbing problem in her house, supposedly caused by her neighbor, who she claimed breaks in and messes with her stuff. According to her, everything wrong inside or outside her house was because of her neighbor's sabotage. She even mentioned plans to kill him. Not exactly the kind of person you want to turn your back on, but also someone who would have been extremely easy to take advantage of. I basically talked her out of redoing the entire plumbing in her bathroom, and we finally settled on me re-aligning her kitchen cabinet doors that - yes, you guessed it - her neighbor had 'messed with.'

    It was quite sad, really. She asked me twice whether I thought her stories sounded crazy, so she was clearly somewhat aware of her condition. I just didn’t know how to deal with someone like that. I refuse to lie, but I also don’t want to tell her she’s losing it. I don’t mind senile people, but I didn’t feel safe around her.

  • Many things. For example, every single president during my lifetime has been almost universally liked by everyone in the country - kind of like a lifetime of Obamas.

    A more recent example of something they do well is when I started my business. I received nearly 10 hours of one-on-one personal guidance on how to do it, completely free. They’re also paying me around 600 euros a month for a year to help me get started.

  • I don’t feel like there’s much difference in how I act depending on the company I’m in. The only difference I can think of is that online, I don’t care about my reputation at all, so I just say what I think - often without caveats. When I inevitably get misunderstood or mislabeled, so be it. Some random person in a different country thinking I’m something I’m not doesn’t really bother me. In real life, I just listen and nod while disagreeing in my mind. It’s usually only when I’m asked that I say what I actually think.

  • I wouldn't mind paying but once more and more site adopt the subscribtion model, then prices like $10 a month becomes unsustainable when you need dozens of subscribtions. I believe that microtransactions are the future of the internet. All content should cost for you to view but only a little bit so that it adds up to like 20 - 50 bucks a month and the money goes mostly to the creators rather than platform.

  • Never bothered me personally. The reason I block people is that I no longer have to see their posts. I find some level on enjoyment in the fact that on Lemmy there are people constantly wasting their time writing replies to me which I'll never read.

  • Exactly. The current rate is 80 deaths per day in the US alone. Even if we had self-driving cars proven to be 10 times safer than human drivers, we’d still see 8 news articles a day about people dying because of them. Taking this as 'proof' that they’re not safe is setting an impossible standard and effectively advocating for 30,000 yearly deaths, as if it’s somehow better to be killed by a human than by a robot.

  • Technically, it’s 'mute,' not 'block.' In most cases, blocking not only prevents you from seeing their content but also them from seeing yours.

    What Twitter is being criticized for here is changing blocking to work similarly to how it does on Lemmy, with the exception that you still couldn’t engage with content from users who have blocked you, whereas on Lemmy, you can.

    It’s being argued that 'weakening' the block feature in this way makes stalking and harassment easier.

  • Every time someone makes a blanket demand like 'everyone just get off Twitter,' and I ask why I should, the answer is more or less: 'I don’t like Elon, so I don’t want anyone using his platform.'

    I’ve yet to figure out why I should care how somebody else feels about what I do online. I don't like TikTok either yet I don't go around telling people to get off the platform.

  • You have data caps on your broadband connections in the US? Does your phones have rotary dials too?

    $190 bucks a month for a limitless connection is insane. I'm too cheap to pay 30€ a month for unlimited fibre connection so I use 4G router which gives me around 40Mbps unlimited connection and it costs me 10€ a month.
