Independent thinker valuing discussions grounded in reason, not emotions.

Open to reconsider my views in light of good-faith counter-arguments but also willing to defend what's right, even when it's unpopular. My goal is to engage in dialogue that seeks truth rather than scoring points.

  • I don't see how this addresses my question. Just because someone is causing bigger harm it doesn't justify causing a little harm. Stealing a lollipop is less bad than stealing a car but it's still both stealing. AI companies can afford paying for the material just like online pirate can afford paying for the movie.

  • Making a copy is free. Making the original is not. I don't expect a professional photographer to hand out their work for free because making copies of it costs nothing. You're not paying for the copy, you're paying for the money and effort needed to create the original.

    This whole conversation so far has entirely missed the point.

    The fact that a self driving car company has gotten people killed is a moot point. Even if we had a self driving car that is 100x safer driver than humans it will still get people killed. Saying "This 100 times safer than human car company has gotten multiple people killed" doesn't mean anything. Human drivers get 110 people killed every single day in the US alone. That's the starting point. Not 0 people getting killed. The only thing that's important here is being better driver than human. Not perfect - better.

  • Well yeah right now that may still be the case but I was mostly thinking about the "true" self driving cars of the future. It seems obvious to be that they would vastly outperform human drivers on literally everything. Just like a true AGI would.

  • So if we replaced every single car in the US with Waymo's vehicles the daily deaths from traffic accidents would drop from 110 to 11. That's 11 news articles every day to use as evidence about how self driving cars are "not safe" because Waymo has killed multiple people.

    That's the absurdity my comment tries to highlight. It's all relative. Pointing to individual accidents is not a proof in itself of something being unsafe. This applies to Tesla FSD as well.

  • Sure, but I was mostly highlighting the naivety of coming to an online forum and effectively saying "please be nice and considerate of other people's feelings" as if that's going to achieve anything else but to make them look like a virtue signaling fool. It's the internet we're talking about after all. I agree with the intention, but see it as a wasted effort. Deadnaming is not going to become the next n-word.

  • I think you were refering to the fact that Teslas used to have radars, not LiDARs on them, then they got disabled and removed and now they're including them on the HW4 model Y and X again. Musk himself has not been insisting anything about "pair of cameras and a single LiDAR sensor" he's always been all about cameras only.

    Why they're buying those sensors now? Who knows. Very unlikely however that they'd be adding them to their current models. It more likely has something to do with training FSD and validating the camera data with LiDAR or then it's related to the Robotaxi. Time will tell.

  • But then the difference is in your personal attitude, not in the act itself. That's a bit like saying that it's okay to screw over a small artist because they're a jerk. It's just an excuse to justify the behaviour to yourself.

    Btw. that's how I justify pirating movies as well. I still consider it stealing though. I just don't feel any remorse for it.

  • Oh, no I totally get it. I'm well aware I'm in the tiny minority that are put off by them. It's just the kind of illusion that once it gets broken you can no longer unsee it.

    Artists need to be compensated for the work they do, agreed? You wouldn't expect a photographer to give you a high resolution version of their picture for free despite the fact that they could, for no cost to themselves. They could hand out a million free copies if they wanted to, but they don't, and we all understand why, right? You need someone to put in the effort to create the original in order for those copies to be made. That's what we're paying for.

    Now how is pirating movies or games any different? How is that not unfair for the artist(s)?
