  • Is it alright to go around wiping the OS off of other people's computers?

    • is what your comment reads like to me.

To be clear: each machine generally needs a computer to be permanently plugged into it. Generally the computer belongs to the university. You're not plugging in your own personal laptop into the machine. Saying to install Linux on these computers is essentially tampering with the university's electronics and IT will be very unhappy that you did that.

  • Depends on the cultivar. Rice does have different flavors, and some are definitely tastier than others, at least in my opinion. Japanese sticky rice is my favorite, and although I wouldn't eat it on its own, I can totally see why someone would enjoy it

  • One of my cats love fishing used tea leaves out from mugs. She doesn't eat them, she just paws the leaves out from the cups and then leaves them on the counter. We have no idea why she does it but she absolutely insists on doing it. No other cat does this.

  • That's the thing - in space, orbits don't decay. Orbital decay only happens if there's dust or atmosphere that you bump into along your orbit to slow you down. But in interplanetary space, there's no dust or atmosphere, and certainly not enough to decay your orbit fast enough to achieve results (otherwise, the Earth would have already decayed and melted in the Sun)

You need to spend fuel to lower your orbit to hit the Sun, and you need to spend fuel to raise your orbit to escape the solar system. It turns out to be really freaking difficult to hit the sun because it simply requires so much fuel to lower your orbit enough to hit the Sun.

  • Describing my job? Yeah, sure. I do science.

Explaining my job? Hell no. Nobody is willing to read a 20 page lit review to start to understand the background of what I do

  • A meme or post that has no deeper meaning. If you have to analyze it or think about it, you're already past a shitpost. The point of a shitpost is the stupidity of its superficial, useless, low-quality humor

It's possible to have a high-quality, high-effort shitpost, but it's rare, since by nature, high effort posts tend to also be meaningful. In my eyes, this is peak high effort shitpost

  • It's a joke that every spider, no matter what it looks like, will eventually be called a brown recluse (usually by someone who doesn't know how to recognize a brown recluse)

  • No, you're right. It's mentioned in the Wikipedia article that lack of genetic diversity is a large concern for obligate parthenogenic animals

  • A lobotomy with a rusty ice pick, at that. I don't know of any situation in which torture could ever be conceived by anyone as an appropriate response, yet here we are

  • Honestly, steam deck lol

It's an odd form factor that people don't really have much experience with, hence they don't really know how useful it'll be to them. To be fair to myself, I had been holding back on purchasing one until maybe a year after the initial launch, so I think I would personally describe my experience as a leap of faith.

In any case, it turns out to be a great little thing. There's a lot of games in my backlog that don't feel "desktop-y," and therefore I've never played them, if that makes sense. But with a handheld form factor, now I have more motivation to go through those games. Emulation on the steam deck has also been great, for a similar reason. And sometimes I just want to be in bed than on my desktop. Or sometimes I'm just on the bus or waiting for something.

I think SteamOS also taught me how usable Linux was, and that's been pretty instrumental in getting me to minimize my Windows dependence

  • Also, she got second degree burns, and she was not the first person to be injured by the coffee, and McDonald's was told multiple times that they served their coffee too hot.

During the trial, McDonald's showed zero care for the the people they injured, to the point that most of the fine that McDonald's ended up paying was punitive damages

  • Windows 11. It sucks but I have apps that don't run on Linux, and there simply aren't any alternatives. I dual boot Kubuntu on my laptop and Kubuntu is great. I just wish software compatibility is better

  • I don't know about your field, but that does seem somewhat suspicious to me. I suppose it depends on which company, which product, and which field.

For instance, I could presumably see an argument for turning down a salesperson applicant to Microsoft for not having used Microsoft Office before. ie, if not using a given product demonstrates lack of experience in the field.

Is the product well-known or a standard in the field?

  • Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria finds a new animatronic

  • I wonder if the wording depends on the field.

As a microbiologist, I would have phrased it like:

    • The sample was destroyed during handling and was not considered for further analysis.
    • The animal was not amenable to handling and was excluded from sample collection.
  • Yes, Wikipedia mentioned that they fall too. The article mentions that the hatchlings have wide feet to help lessen the chances that they fall

  • Searched it up cause I was curious too. It's the white tern, and according to Wikipedia, the egg does roll off frequently. The bird simply doesn't care and lays another egg
