  • My neighbour buys grapes, presses them (not trampling), and puts them into demijohns with an airlock. He adds nothing. It ferments using yeast on the grapes over several months. Over the course of a year, he decants from one demijohn to the next, which clarifies yeast, then he bottles and lets it rest some more. It’s in a cool part of the house, about 14-18C.

It’s very tasty wine, but doesn’t have any oak overtones or adjuncts (whether lead or vanillin or whatever else is added), it’s not blended, and it’s moderate abv (around 10%).

This process requires very little in terms of specific materials other than the glass instead of clay. Clay vessels, being porous, would alter the flavour and would harbour yeasties and other microorganisms. But even accounting for that, I don’t think there’s any basis to say ancient wine would be dogshit. It may be different, accounting for taste, but not bad. (Consider the popularity of sour beers (kettle sours or otherwise) and hazy beers. Both of those were considered highly undesirable properties of beer for most of the 20th century - so tastes change. )

  • Either weld a flange on (make sure the angles are matching) or cut it off and make it slip.

  • Good; incentive to go learn something. Have a plan in place to deal with it though.

    Firewall rules don’t replace parenting.

  • Just create a dhcp reservation in unifi.

  • I know too many people who do the same thing despite having smartphones.

  • I used my work address. My work is small enough that it’ll filter to me eventually if they snail mail me.

  • The current situation with megabytes of JavaScript is pretty bad, but at the time, there was still a fair bit of dialup active, and mobile web was just starting to be a thing - on EDGE and barely 3G. It would take minutes to load.

Also, Steve Jobs had it in for Flash and that’s what ultimately killed it off, I think.

  • That’s a sign of unmanaged dependency.

  • It’s not just industry. Now they’re killing the development of skills and knowledge in engineering (hardware, software) and design

  • USA could have spent money developing an electrified economy but the republicans are focusing on bringing back coal mining and reshoring shoe manufacturing instead.

This admin has set the USA back 100 years.

ETA - what I mean is that China is rampaging on in electrification, developing manufacturing skills, infrastructure, and design/engineering/technology around renewables and electrification. Europe is thinking about it but not going crazy to the extent China is, because legacy - China doesn’t have 100 years of cars and 150 years of trains; they’re building new. USA meanwhile is actively regressing under Republican policies.

  • They’re mostly all made in one or two factories in China. Midea and another one.

When it comes time to replace the AC, consider getting one that’s reversible and runs as a heat pump. You don’t need to use it, but it shouldn’t cost much more and gives you flexibility.

  • I can’t wear glasses in sauna because they get too hot.

The room is at at 90-110 and the only reason I’m not is because I’m sweating, but my glasses and hair and whatever isn’t wet and evaporating gets burning hot to the touch.

Reminds me. I need to build one in my garden.

But I had some sunglasses that have had the coating peel off just outside of warranty and I think it’s because they’re dark and got hot in the sun. I feel like that should be a consideration when designing the coating.

  • I was a bit of not interested and not educated enough to know what a NDRI was while I was on it but it does make sense for ADHD and Depression symptoms.

The withdrawal from Wellbutrin was bad. I got brain zaps if I was 1hr late taking it; tapering and cessation was miserable.

  • I think you’re correct. Still, I’d cut it out just call it my new steam vent

  • toxoplasmosis has entered the chat

  • “If it wasn’t for my medical leave, HP and Apple would be competing for the mobile market!”

It takes a lot of arrogance to be a senior executive; the way he tells the story justifies his position, that’s for sure.

  • During this same period, he became laser-focused on acquiring Autonomy for $10.3 billion—a software company that fit his transformation vision perfectly. Everything else, including breakthrough mobile technology, felt like a distraction from this software-focused strategy. That Autonomy acquisition later required more than an $8 billion write-down,

Apotheker wrote down 9.2 billion in 11 months and that’s just the stuff the article mentions. I can’t achieve that level of failure in a lifetime.

  • You missed 2. Sell (IPO)company

I’m not sure what he she actually did as far as divestiture, but evidently he wasn’t the current owner. I wonder to what degree unreasonable growth expectations flushed the company.

  • Miele, Asko, or Bosch in a pinch.

Some low end Bosch have in the past been Frigidaire or something dressed up as a Bosch. Keep an eye out for that.

I replaced my Miele (2001 build date) this year. The control panel was getting a little unreliable. It still was cleaning dishes (when it started).
