  • I started to get better at sight reading the more I did scales and intervals and such. But I’m not sure that’s a universal thing and I never got very good. Comes down to practice.

  • Yeah, a few hundred outliers can really ruin it. People: have some self awareness and don’t be a douchebag.

  • A calamity?

O&G industry is generating (more) wealth for the owners than in decades prior. Who cares what the industry looks like in 10 years. They’ve got theirs, and more!

  • There is less money in these “markets”, they’re newer, and they’re easier to attack on the basis of gaming. On the other hand, both prediction games and stock markets are infested with so called lawmakers.

  • I’m fairly decent with mechanical work and I can work trades too.

But I won’t be doing that; if AI takes my job, it’s taken the economy and it’ll be a dystopia. I’ll be farming my back yard wishing it was big enough to sustain my family and knowing it’s not.

  • Oh cool. Cool cool cool.

Crowdstrike processes their signature files in kernel mode. Defender helpfully pastes malware over system files. Ivanti has a new critical vulnerability every week or so. Why are security vendors incompetent?

  • How am I supposed to project my corporate signalling?

  • I wonder if the file pointers instead of actual files is a technical hurdle. (OneDrive/dropbox).

But it really needs to be communicated to users, not just “hopefully you notice at some point, also we put it on our blog”.

Especially git. That’s not a lot of data.

  • I really do hate the edges on the unibody macs. I don’t think I can take a file to a paycheque’s worth of delicate electronics.

  • Your IT department is ludicrous. The resale value isn’t impacted by stickers; they’re sold in lots.

  • Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!

  • They’re pervasive in an annoying way, and the boosters are using them for utterly ridiculous things.

They have their very limited uses. For short things they can be useful, within reason. “How do you take these results and transform them into X in Python” then take a very squinty look at it and figure out where it went wrong. Then, try asking a couple follow-ups and the code just scrambles.

For writing I’ve found they're pretty useless, because I can’t figure out how to prompt them to not sound like they’re in the marketing department and blowing smoke.

But they can be a good starting point for finding information when I’m looking for something that’s really a Reddit question, rather than something I can summarize into keywords for a search engine. Still, too often useless.

I recently had someone send me “is it cheaper to air bnb or get a hotel at $destination” and it was absurdly incorrect, as in off by a factor of two. When it would have taken mere seconds more to get correct information. I have relatives who work in professions which literally define accuracy (accounting and law) and they rely on them for stuff like that, and it’s so provably incorrect

  • First ask yourself what benefit you gain from isolating services.

Untrustworthy devices like work computers, smart TVs, and IoT sure have good reasons. Possibly a DMZ. But you might do as well to simply block all egress from a few internal IPs instead.

Move things slowly, because you’ll need to see what traffic needs to flow and what doesn’t, and you may find that you need some helper services for cross vlan (for example mDNS).

ETA: guest wifi is good too; force the traffic through firewall and keep it off your internal network

  • Hmm not a bad idea, especially I can find some games that are good.

  • I went looking recently. There’s some seriously expensive Blu ray players these days. Not many disc players on Amazon, if any.

  • The asshats for some reason felt that they needed to reinvent it as basically a web app and it’s broken in so many ways, and I think it’s lost feature parity with mobile and Mac instead of gaining. Sheer incompetence.

  • Yeah, kids these days can barely string together a sentence in a long form blog post. btw y u use short form everywhere its not 2004 and you’re not sending an SMS.

I thought the zoomers were suppose to be smart with social media; this guy mocked the police and campus officials on Instagram and is surprised when they kick back.

  • So. Fucking. Dumb.
