  • That's what irritates me about people like OP's argument. I vaped to get off cigarettes but I don't necessarily want to quit nicotine. They conflate all the terrible aspects of smoking with vaping and then point to people not quitting vaping as "proof" that it doesn't work. Not everyone who picks up vaping is trying to quit nicotine.

  • The logic is flawed here because vapor and smoke are completely different things. You wouldn't conflate the steam coming off a pot of boiling water with the charred remains of that frozen pizza you forgot about in the oven an hour ago would you?

  • Depends on what you mean by a "robot" but you might look at the ZenXY machine from V1Engineering. It's an open source project meant to be used for drawing in sand but could be swapped and flipped over to use as a drawing machine. You could also Google "pen plotter projects" or something similar as I've seen a few out there that do exactly what you're asking.

    As others have said, a 3D printer can do this too if you replace the extruder with a pen and configure it correctly. You're just looking for any sort of CNC controlled device for the hardware. For the software you'll need something that can generate gcode to draw what you want. Sandify is a tool that was created to work with the above mentioned ZenXY in order to create drawings and export them as gcode, but you'd need to do these ahead of time and have them stored on the device.

  • It's a midtower case so I just went with an ATX board. I would like to figure out a compact solution for the future but it's hard to house and control a bunch of HDDs in a small footprint. I don't want to spend thousands on a NAS and I haven't found a trustworthy DAS solution that will hold all my drives.

    You might play around with PCPartPicker since it allows for so many filtering options for things like SATA ports on a mobo or drive slots in a case and see what you can come up with.

  • I built my own and it honestly wasn't that expensive (at the time back in 2018). I just started with the basics but built it to be expandable. I used a Define 6 case which gave me room for 12 HDDs, a mobo with the highest number of SATA ports, processor, RAM, etc and then just added drives 1-2 at a time as they filled up. My only regret is that I didn't and still haven't learned Linux well enough to rely on it because it runs Windows, the PC is showing its age now, and I need to think about the replacement solution and how I'll be able to migrate 70+ TB of media and all my configurations to the new machine.

    If you do run Windows, Drivepool and SnapRAID are useful for pooling everything into a single virtual disk and setting up a software RAID that will protect from drive failures without locking your data away.

  • Something that helps me that I think a lot of people overlook is that you simply need to steer the front in order to point the back wheels where you want to go because they always track in a straight line. The front can easily shift left and right with small movements if the front of your car is in the wrong position, but there's no way to shift the back wheels side to side without starting over completely.

  • The prequels were a hot mess too. I watched episode 1 in theaters when it first came out and didn't bother watching 2 and 3 until probably around 2019 and have zero regrets about that.

    I think they're getting a pass now because 7-9 were even worse, but this is like looking back at George W. Bush fondly just because of how awful Trump is.
