  • Good comment. To support your theory of injury to the brain, look carefully at the photo. (If you're on desktop you can click on it to get a better view.) In my own layman's opinion, his pupils do not seem to be well aligned, and there may be some ptosis that the direction of his gaze is minimizing.

    They could be aligned and I'm just looking at it wrong, but a direct facing look would have gone a lot further to prove sentience, IMO.

  • I definitely respect your need for proof, especially in this situation: I think we could all do with more than a simple photograph when it comes to a lying liar who lies facing a governor who is itching to call a special election to replace him if he doesn't issue some kind of proof of life right now.

    However, the WaPo page itself is probably legit. The article directly links to a fairly hi-res image of that page on the WaPo site. Paragraph 5:

    The statement included a smiling picture of McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao, a tacit response to speculation online that he had died or was incapacitated. McConnell held a copy of Sunday’s Washington Post sports section in his hand.

    Also, his wife is smiling. I'm not absolutely sure it's because he's alive, but okay.

  • Will a factory reset get rid of the firmware update(s) on your model? It's not guaranteed but sometimes that will get you back to where you started.

    If it does, all that's left to do is to completely close down any automatic update path (network access to internet, cable access to internet-connected PC, whatever applies to your situation). Yes, you can turn off automatic updates in settings, but on newer models especially that's not the guarantee it once was, esp on Windows machines with bidirectional printing features enabled: Windows will force update the printer itself. Anymore I set all my printers to wireless and then block them by MAC address at the firewall.

    God forbid some young people might actually meet a trans person (or some other "othered" person) and think they're okay, and through this casual interaction and others like them coming to realize that, when it comes to inborn characteristics, people are all more alike than we are different.

    If some statement or action separates groups and creates divisions between individuals, it helps their own cause, which is to control the populace by any means possible.

    And they do like 'em young, in all sorts of ways, hence the extreme focus on young people charting an independent course, even a life path born of necessity such as being gay or trans. If you're gay or trans, you are already not going to fit into the little box they want to trap you in, just by default. You may force yourself to fit it, but at what cost? So you make your own way, and they don't want the other kids seeing that and thinking, hey, I could make my own way too.

    Gay and trans kids prove to those who get to know them that there are many valid life paths, many different ways of making a good life for yourself that do not involve the usual narrative of getting married and having kids, and often that you can and will escape a family of origin that does not accept you as you are. That frightens authoritarians and controllers, a lot.

    You know what else scares the bejeebus out of them? People accepting other people, talking with each other as their equals, and finding out they have the same shared values.

    Plus, if they shut down a dance they think it reminds everybody of who's in charge, something a small town dictator will never pass up.

  • There are dozens that have their new energy infrastructure costs and even their power usage shared among all the residents of that utility district. They're hard to find out about because the contracts are often secretive -- can't imagine why -- but this was going on for a while before people started to put up a stink about data centers.

    Platner won the Democratic primary, so the Democratic Party of Maine will select the winner according to Maine law and the state Democratic Party charter. From the Portland Press-Herald article I linked above:

    According to Maine law, if a candidate nominated in a primary election withdraws on or before 5 p.m. on the second Monday in July — July 13 this year — a replacement candidate can be named. Platner dropping out now makes that replacement process possible.

    The Democrats have until the fourth Monday in July — July 27 this year — to fill the vacancy, according to the Maine Department of the Secretary of State.

    According to the Democratic Party charter, the process for naming replacement candidates includes convening a nominating meeting assembled by a person appointed by the party chair.

    The charter does not provide great detail on the process for picking a replacement but says the meeting should be run in accordance with state law and the party charter.

  • Sounds about right. For myself, I don't think they can get past just how disliked Mills was during the primary. Poll or not, choosing someone that can actually win against Collins would seem to be the ultimate goal, but some of them would rather lose than take the wrong winner so who knows. They have until July 27, apparently.

    Jackson has a pretty good platform, at least. There also seems to be a lot of ground support for Dr. Nirav Shah, which was a name I hadn't seen much before now, and Shah has a platform almost identical to Jackson but not much experience to go with it.

    I guess we'll see pretty soon.
