  • What news sources do you follow with which you generally disagree?

  • I don't really follow right-wing news sources, as much as I follow right-wing commentators. I already know what the news on the right says, but what I'm interested in is how the people on the right actually interpret that news; which points they choose to regurgitate, and which points the average person on the right will latch onto. FOX News can say 30 different things about one particular news story, but generally the audience will only focus on one or two.

  • I'm on Google Fi in the US. $50/mo for 3 lines with unlimited calling/texting, and $10/GB of data, with charges capping at 12 GB (data isn't limited to 12 GB, they just stop charging you after 12 GB; this threshold depends on the number of lines on the account - more lines results in a higher pricing cap). I'm on wifi 99.99% of the time so it's generally pretty rare that I use more than a single GB across all 3 lines.

    I'm glad you did, I appreciate your insight on the subject! It looks like the article may have been updated since I originally read it, as it no longer refers to a promotion like I saw earlier. That's a lot more concerning, to know that he was still a civilian the whole time. I feel like that sets a dangerous precedent that would be very easy to abuse.

  • The headline leaves out some key details. It looks like he did this to avoid a promotion, specifically. Meaning that he was already enlisted, and gave up a lot of rights that a civilian would otherwise have. The article doesn't make it clear if the same sort of conviction could be applied to a civilian trying to dodge the draft.

    EDIT: The article has been updated and no longer seems to refer to the person receiving a promotion, and it appears he was always a civilian.

  • Nah, take a look at the top comments in any of the default subreddits. They're either copy/pastes of the top comment from the last time the same meme was posted, or they're very clearly LLM-generated. Most of the big subs are absolutely loaded with bot activity these days.

    This is probably the reason why your popcorn button actually works. If your home already has a built-in microwave, it's likely a higher quality one than what you could pick up from the hardware store. Most consumer-grade microwaves, regardless of the brand or model, are all identical, as they all use components sourced from one single manufacturer that makes one single version of them. The only thing that's different is the plastic shell they put it all in and the logo they slap on the front, but the important things like the magnetron and control boards are all the exact same hardware.

    But the microwaves that are usually built-into the home? Those are the good ones. Those are the ones where the builder spent some good money, because it was included in the design spec to begin with. Care went into the selection of that microwave. That microwave is more likely to have the moisture sensors needed to actually have functioning popcorn, reheat, and defrost settings that do more than just assume an appropriate time/power setting.

    Having a proper microwave is a totally different experience. I had one at an old apartment of mine that was amazing. It had a button that just said "Reheat", and required zero other inputs from me. I could put my food in, regardless of what kind of food it is or what quantity I was making, and press the Reheat button once, and it would bring it to the perfect temperature, hot all the way through. I wish I could've taken it with me when I moved out.

  • I don't think it's that we want "big" communities, necessarily, as much as we want active communities. For instance, if there's a niche game I want to talk about, it's currently a roll of the dice whether or not there's a Lemmy community for it, and then if it does exist already then it's pretty much guaranteed to see 2, maybe 3 posts per week, tops.

    That's really the only thing I miss about Reddit, being able to pretty much always have a discussion on any topic you'd want, at any given time.

  • For what it's worth, what you use a Chromebook for doesn't have to be limited to just Google's ecosystem. While it's going to be optimized for it, you can do pretty much anything you'd normally use Chrome for on a standard desktop OS (with the exception of any advanced things that may require specific hardware/software to run, like some browser games). If all you do on the internet is browse social media and chat with friends, it'll cover most of your basic needs.

    Mine's my toilet computer. Gonna be on the can for a while? Might as well scroll through Lemmy in the meantime.

  • I dunno how reliable it is, but I've had a lot of cats growing up, and we'd always try to get them used to water when they were still very young kittens, giving them baths in the kitchen sink. Most of my cats ended up tolerating getting a bath into adulthood (I don't think any of them loved it, but they didn't freak out about it), though we had one who was always a crybaby about it, from day one.

    Sometimes you just get lucky and end up with a cat that absolutely loves water. I had one that I'd have to lock out of the bathroom whenever I'd shower, because she'd always want to get in the water and start rolling around and try to get under my feet.

  • I've been playing Yeule's softscars over and over for a few weeks now. I've never really been into shoegaze, but they put a really interesting twist on it that I've fallen in love with. The lyrics are very dark and personal, and it's a very heavy album - both musically and emotionally. Their videos all have really beautiful aesthetics, and I really love the late 90s/early 00s feeling in the video for dazies.
